‘The Black Hole’: Edgar Wright Is NOT Directing Reboot of the 1979 Sci-Fi Disney Cult Film!!

Despite recent reports making the rounds online, Edgar Wright is not attached to direct a remake of The Black Hole for Disney, Collider has learned. Earlier this week, a widely circulated story originating from industry scooper Daniel Richtman and later echoed by World of Reel claimed that Wright was in talks with Disney to helm a new version of the 1979 sci-fi cult film, with a script reportedly being co-written by Wright and Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish. That story, however intriguing it sounded to fans of both Wright and vintage genre cinema, is simply not true. According to reliable sources close to the situation, there is no active deal involving Wright, Cornish, or Disney concerning The Black Hole. Sorry, folks.

The original 1979 film — Disney’s first PG-rated release — was a bold, eerie, and philosophical experiment that gained a cult following in the decades after its release. With existential themes, kitschy-yet-memorable robot designs, and a famously haunting score by John Barry, The Black Hole has long been seen as ripe for reimagining. It was previously slated for a remake back in 2009 with F1 and Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski attached, but that version never materialized. Wright, a self-professed fan of the original, has publicly mentioned the film before — leading many to believe a remake could be a passion project. But passion doesn’t always translate to production.

What Is Edgar Wright Making Next?

While Wright is not boarding The Black Hole, he is keeping busy. His next confirmed project is a new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Running Man, starring Glen Powell. From the looks of the trailer, it will lean a lot more closely to King‘s original story and distance itself from the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger adaptation, and it’s set to hit theaters this fall. Wright has also been developing a new horror feature following Last Night in Soho, though no official announcement has been made. So while The Black Hole may remain adrift in the development void for now, there’s still plenty of Edgar Wright to look forward to — just not at the edge of a collapsing star.
