HBO just gave fans of the Wizarding World something to cheer about — and he’s about half-giant-sized. In a brand-new image released from the set of the upcoming Harry Potter series, audiences get their first glimpse of Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, the lovable, half-giant gamekeeper of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. And if the oversized coat, massive beard, and wide-eyed warmth don’t scream Hagrid, we don’t know what does.
The first-look photo, seen above, shows Frost fully transformed into one of the most beloved characters in the franchise. Wearing Hagrid’s signature patchwork overcoat and striped waistcoat, Frost looks every inch the gentle giant — equal parts imposing and inviting, and a little bit confused. This new image follows yesterday’s debut look at Dominic McLaughlin in costume as Harry Potter himself. The two reveals come amid production ramping up on the first season of the high-profile HBO reboot, which promises to adapt J.K. Rowling’s original books across seven full-length seasons — one per novel — with greater faithfulness and depth than the previous films.
Who Is Hagrid?
Originally played by the late Robbie Coltrane in the Warner Bros. films, Hagrid remains a fan-favorite character across generations. Loyal to Dumbledore, fiercely protective of Harry and his friends, and always up for tea and a treacle fudge, Hagrid represents the beating heart of the early stories. His hut on the edge of the Forbidden Forest was the scene of everything from baby dragon hatching to some of the series’ most emotional moments.
The new Harry Potter series is being helmed by showrunner Francesca Gardiner (His Dark Materials) with Mark Mylod (Succession) directing episodes of the first season. The show features a brand-new cast, including Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow plays Dumbledore, while Paapa Essiedu takes on the role of Severus Snape. Production is currently underway in the UK, with cameras rolling on what’s expected to be one of HBO’s most ambitious undertakings yet. Filming is set to continue through early 2026, with Platform 9¾ already being rebuilt on the Leavesden lot.
Harry Potter will debut on HBO in 2027.
