Ryan Gosling is trading in Ken’s fur coat for a bulletproof vest. The La La Land star is set to headline Tough Guys, a new action comedy that pairs him with none other than his Barbie co-star Will Ferrell. The project is in development at Amazon MGM Studios, Deadline has confirmed, with both stars set to produce through their respective banners. And no, this is not a sequel to The Fall Guy, nor is it a sequel to their Jimmy Kimmel bit, Knife Guys. Or even Guys and Dolls.
Originally written as a spec script by Daniel Gold, Tough Guys tells the story of two criminal henchmen who are fed up with being expendable cannon fodder. Tired of their roles in the shadows, they decide to ditch the underworld entirely and rewrite the rules on their own terms — by breaking free and forging a new path. Expect equal parts bullets and belly laughs, with Gosling trying desperately not to crack at Ferrell‘s straight man bit.
Gosling will produce via General Admission, the company he launched with producer Jessie Henderson, which currently holds a first-look deal with Amazon MGM. Ferrell is also producing under his Gloria Sanchez Productions banner alongside Jessica Elbaum. Trevor Engelson and Aaron Folbe are executive producing for Underground. A director has yet to be announced.
Have Ryan Gosling and Will Ferrell Worked Together Before?
While Gosling and Ferrell first shared the screen in Barbie, and there’s already some cinematic synergy between them. Gosling has previously gushed about Step Brothers being his “secret favorite movie” — a comedy classic led by Ferrell and John C. Reilly and directed by Adam McKay. “You could be in a bad place in your life, you could be in a great place in your life, it’s always the right time,” Gosling said of the film. “I could always watch Will Ferrell.”
Now, with Tough Guys, he finally gets his shot at collaborating with one of the comedy greats side-by-side — and with Ferrell in full creative control, it’s safe to say this won’t be your average buddy flick. Think John Wick meets Step Brothers, with a splash of The Nice Guys chaos thrown in for good measure. Next up for Gosling is his record-breaking upcoming sci-fi epic, Project Hail Mary, which is set to release on March 20, 2026. The trailer for Project Hail Mary became the most-watched teaser ever for an original movie, scoring over 400 million views in its first week.
