Dwayne Johnson is among the few actors who have successfully transitioned from a wrestling career to acting. Johnson has given us some amazing action movies, some feel-good ones, and now he’s hell bent on cementing his acting prowess with the upcoming Bennie Safdie’s biographical sports drama The Smashing Machine. The movie will make its world premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival this Fall.
To mark the occasion A24 has unveiled a new look at Johnson and Emily Blunt. Fans have seen Johnson’s transformation as wrestler Mark Kerr in the ring but the new image gives us a peak into the dynamics between Kerr and his then-wife Dawn Staples (Blunt) as they walk hand in hand in a market. While Johnson looks like a man on a mission, Blunt gives him an admiring look.
Dwayne Johnson Has Worked Very Hard for ‘The Smashing Machine

The movie follows Mark Kerr’s journey as he reaches the peak of his career but faces personal hardships. The first trailer of the movie blew fans’ minds as Johnson was unrecognizable even to his avid fans. The new image shows a different side to his character, and it’ll be very interesting to see The Rock in this avatar. Dana White, the President and CEO of UFC, told Collider exclusively last year that he believed Johnson had a shot at awards
I don’t know if you saw it, but he was showing on his Instagram the other day that he messed up his elbow. The Rock will kill this. He will nail this role. I know how serious he’s taking this, I know who’s working with him, and I know how hard he’s working on this film. I think that this could be the opportunity for The Rock to actually be nominated for an Oscar.
The supporting cast includes Lyndsey Gavin as Elizabeth Coleman, Ryan Bader as Mark Coleman, Zoe Kosovic as McKenzie Coleman, and Bas Rutten appearing as himself. Other cast members include Oleksandr Usyk as Igor Vovchanchyn, Paul Lazenby as Hans Nijman, James Moontasri as Akira Shoji, Yoko Hamamura as Kazuyuki Fujita, Paul Cheng as Masaaki Satake, and Andre Tricoteux as Paul Varelans. Safdie directs from his own script.
After making its Venice debut, The Smashing Machine will open in theaters on October 3, 2025. Check out the new image above.
