Tim Burton‘s Sleepy Hollow, which graced theaters back in 1999, is finally getting a sequel — but there’s a catch. Loosely adapted from Washington Irving’s 1820 short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the gothic fantasy horror film has since become one of Burton’s most iconic projects, alongside Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice. With a 71% critics’ score and an 80% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film’s influence and appeal remain undeniable, even 26 years after its release. Now, nearly three decades since its debut, fans will finally be getting a sequel, though it’s coming in the form of a comic series.
According to Entertainment Weekly, IDW Dark (the horror imprint of IDW Publishing) will be releasing a new comic series titled Return to Sleepy Hollow, set 15 years after the events of the 1999 film starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci. Written by Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic writer Casey Gilly, with artwork by Savanna Mayer, the series continues IDW Dark‘s latest attempt to adapt Paramount‘s horror properties into comic book form. Return to Sleepy Hollow is set to hit shelves on October 29, just in time for Halloween.
What To Expect in the ‘Sleepy Hollow’ Comic Series Sequel
With creative names attached to the project, fans can rest assured that the Sleepy Hollow comic series sequel is in good hands. For one, Gilly, who won an Eisner Award for her short story A Funeral in Foam, brings her award-winning storytelling talent to the next chapter. Meanwhile, Mayer — making her comics debut — brings her artistry to expand the tale of Sleepy Hollow. The 1999 movie follows Ichabod Crane (Depp), a police constable sent to the village of Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of mysterious deaths, with victims found decapitated, allegedly perpetrated by the mysterious Headless Horseman. Along his journey, he also becomes romantically entangled with the daughter of a wealthy businessman, Katrina Anne Van Tassel (Ricci).
Per EW‘s report, Return to Sleepy Hollow will see Ichabod once again, this time having built quite a reputation as “a debunker of occult claims around the world.” However, a letter urges him to, well, return to Sleepy Hollow, which reunites him with his “now-estranged love,” Katrina. The plot description reads, “Together, they will uncover the truth of Sleepy Hollow’s origins and the roots that connect them all.”
Return to Sleepy Hollow is available for purchase this October 29 through nearby comic bookshops. You can check out some of the looks from the upcoming comic book series above.
