‘Joan’: Sophie Turner led Acclaimed Crime Series Won’t Be Getting a Follow-Up!!

Game of ThronesSophie Turner portrayed a struggling single mother who becomes an expert jewel thief in the critically acclaimed Joan, from Anna Symon. The series premiered on September 29, 2024, with the finale airing on October 14 of that year and was an instant hit, partly thanks to Turner’s beautiful performance. Given the reception, many may have expected an immediate renewal for the show, but that’s unfortunately not the case, as we’ve finally learned the fate of Joan ahead of the lead star’s next project.

As confirmed by an ITV spokesperson via Radio Times, Joan won’t be returning for another run, even though “ITV and Snowed-In Productions would love to produce” a second installment. This is due to scheduling issues among the cast, as the rep added, “However, as a consequence of cast availability and following co-production discussions, it has meant a second series wasn’t possible.” What a bummer indeed, even with the Certified Fresh 81% rating the series holds on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as the consensus that reads, “Sophie Turner shines like a diamond in Joan, a stylish crime drama that pays dividends with its 1980s period detail and feminist edge.”

Following Joan, Turner will next be seen in the upcoming gothic horror film The Dreadful, reuniting with Game of Thrones star Kit Harington. She is also in talks to lead Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider Prime Video series as Lara Croft herself. Another announced project in the works is the thriller film Trust, in which her role is still a mystery, as well as Prime Video‘s Steal. In addition to Game of Thrones, Turner is well known for portraying Jean Grey in the X-Men film series and her feature film debut in the 2013 psychological thriller Another Me.

What Is ‘Joan’ About?

Set in the 1980s, Joan is inspired by Joan Hannington’s 2002 memoir, I Am What I Am: The True Story of Britain’s Most Notorious Jewel Thief. The period drama follows the title character, a fiery and uncompromising woman in her 20s, who is a devoted mother to her 6-year-old daughter, Kelly (Mia Millichamp-Long), but is trapped in a disastrous marriage with a violent criminal named Gary. When Gary goes on the run, Joan seizes the opportunity to create a new life for herself and her daughter. Adopting new identities and making new acquaintances along the way, she becomes a masterful jewel thief and embarks on a thrilling, high-stakes journey that challenges her every limit, driven by her desire to create a secure home. The series also stars Frank Dillane, Laura Aikman, Gershwyn Eustache Jr., and Jack Greenlees.

Binge all six episodes of Joan playing now on Prime Video.
