‘James Bond’: ‘Peaky Blinders’ Creator Steven Knight to Write Denis Villeneuve Directorial!!

As part of their bold new direction for the James Bond franchise, Amazon MGM Studios has officially set Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight to write the next 007 movie, according to a report today by Deadline. The announcement follows the studio’s high-profile hiring of Denis Villeneuve to direct the reboot, signaling a prestige-heavy reinvention of the iconic spy series. Producers Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: No Way Home) and David Heyman (Harry Potter, Barbie) are spearheading the project under their Pascal Pictures and Heyday Films banners, respectively. Tanya Lapointe, Villeneuve’s longtime producing partner, will executive produce.

The script marks the first major creative step for Bond’s next chapter since Amazon gained full creative control of the franchise in a landmark deal earlier this year. The studio spent months meeting with prospective screenwriters, but insiders are reported to have said that Knight had always been a front-runner — particularly after his name came up in connection with Villeneuve’s own vision for Bond. That creative synergy was crucial: sources indicate the studio waited to finalize Knight’s deal until after a one-on-one with Villeneuve, who is currently shooting Dune: Part Three. That meeting reportedly happened last week, with the Blade Runner 2049 director giving full approval for Knight to board the project.

Fans hoping for casting news will have to wait. Insiders say no movement on the search for the next 007 will take place until Knight finishes his script and Villeneuve wraps his Dune trilogy. The studio’s current focus is entirely on the creative foundation — tone, character, and structure — rather than chasing a headline-grabbing star. Based on previous casting, though, it seems more likely that we’ll see an up-and-coming star rather than an A-list name already used to the spotlight.

Who Is Steven Knight?

Knight is one of the UK’s most decorated storytellers, best known for creating Peaky Blinders, which ran for six acclaimed seasons and turned Cillian Murphy’s Thomas Shelby into a cultural icon. His TV credits include Taboo (with Tom Hardy), See (Apple TV+), SAS: Rogue Heroes (BBC), and All the Light We Cannot See (Netflix), the latter earning multiple Golden Globe nominations. In film, he wrote Dirty Pretty Things, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, as well as Eastern Promises, Spencer, and Serenity, three of which he also directed.

Knight is currently developing a Peaky Blinders movie and the upcoming historical series House of Guinness, both for Netflix. He’s also been recognized with a CBE and a Royal Television Society Fellowship for his contributions to UK entertainment and the Birmingham creative community.
