
How soon could fans see a sequel to the summer blockbuster, Superman? Faster than a speeding bullet? On Threads, DCU head and Superman director, James Gunn, may have just casually teased that a sequel to the 83% Certified Fresh film. The film stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Superman has officially ushered in DCU and now Gunn is teasing on social media that a follow-up could be coming. When asked what Gunn is up to next now that press for the film is over, Gunn teases “Peacemaker press!! And sequel writing!!!” on his list of things to do. The most logical place for fans’ minds to go is, of course, a sequel to Superman. The newest movie to feature Superman just surpassed $300 million domestically. The film also surpassed Man of Steel‘s domestic haul. Superman is now considered the highest-grossing solo Superman movie in film history.
A sequel coming down the pipeline is no surprise to fans that saw the movie and enjoyed it, feeling as though Superman is just the tip of the iceberg to Gunn‘s DCU. Multiple projects are either confirmed to be in the works or existing in the ether of being teased, much like this “sequel” that Gunn is referring to. While it’s not confirmed that the sequel will be to Superman, and it could even be a sequel to something unrelated to the DCU, fans are all the more champing at the bit for more of Gunn‘s new universe.
What’s Next for the DCU?
The DCU is set to consist of a healthy mix of live-action feature-length films as well as television shows, and animated projects. The animated series, Creature Commandos is already greenlit for a season two, Lanterns is expected sometime soon, and next year fans will get to see Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, based on the comic of the same name. Filming for Supergirl wrapped earlier this year. Peacemaker Season 2 is expected on HBO Max on August 21, with a trailer dropping ahead of San Diego Comic Con just recently, seeing the return of John Cena‘s Christopher Smith, as well as the exclusive footage shown to an eager crowd of fans, confirming the existence of a multiverse within the DCU.
