And just like that, it’s over. HBO Max’s And Just Like That…, the sequel series to Sex and the City, will officially end with its current third season. According to showrunner Michael Patrick King, the decision was made during the writing process for the finale — which will now be a two-part episode, airing later this year. The season’s episode count has also been extended from 10 to 12 to accommodate the farewell.
“And just like that… the ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end,” King said in a statement Friday morning. “While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That… Season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop.”
King added that he made the decision in collaboration with Sarah Jessica Parker, HBO & Max Content Chairman Casey Bloys, and Head of Max Original Programming Sarah Aubrey. “SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn’t want the word ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season,” King said. “It’s with great gratitude we thank all the viewers who have let these characters into their homes and their hearts over these many years.”
Although, let’s be honest, this would never have happened had they managed to get Kim Cattrall back, since it’s always felt like something from the original was missing without its breakout character.
What Was ‘And Just Like That’ About?
Premiering in December 2021, And Just Like That… reunited longtime friends Carrie Bradshaw (Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) for a fresh wave of romantic reinventions and emotional reckonings in modern-day Manhattan. Season 1 opened with Carrie reeling from the shocking death of Mr. Big (Chris Noth), while Miranda’s journey of self-discovery led to a relationship with the absolutely atrocious Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez), and Charlotte wrestled with motherhood and shifting social norms.
Season 2 introduced the return of Aidan Shaw (John Corbett), reigniting an old flame for Carrie. Charlotte continued to navigate family life and identity, while Miranda’s partnership with Che deepened before ultimately transforming once again. Season 3, currently airing, picks up with Carrie stepping forward into a life post-Aidan, Miranda exploring new relationships, and Charlotte leaning further into her career ambitions.
There’s no official date yet for the finale episodes, but HBO Max has confirmed the two-part conclusion will air later this year.
