The end of the world is coming… again. Lionsgate has officially set Greenland 2: Migration for release on January 9, 2026, giving Gerard Butler fans their next dose of post-apocalyptic survival. The film takes over the date previously held by Jason Statham’s Mutiny, which will now move to a summer 2026 release. The sequel sees Butler reuniting with co-stars Morena Baccarin and Roman Griffith Davis, as the Garrity family is forced to leave the safety of their Greenland bunker to traverse a shattered world in search of a new home. Along the way, they’ll encounter both new allies and fresh dangers, with Amber Rose Revah, Sophie Thompson, Trond Fausa Aurvåg, and William Abadie joining the cast.
The original Greenland, released in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, became an unexpected hit. Sidetracked from a traditional release by theater closures, the film scored a $20–$30 million HBO streaming deal in the U.S. and still managed to top the box office in 26 countries, grossing over $52 million internationally. Critics gave it a 77% score on Rotten Tomatoes, praising its grounded take on the disaster genre.
This time, the stakes are bigger. Director Ric Roman Waugh returns to helm Migration, with a script from Mitchell LaFortune and original writer Chris Sparling. Producers include Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Butler, Alan Siegel, Sébastien Raybaud, John Zois, Brendon Boyea, and Waugh himself. STX is handling international distribution through its global network of partners, while Lionsgate will oversee domestic release. Waugh has teased that the sequel will explore “how different cultures deal with global catastrophe,” with a reported $65 million budget—nearly double that of the first film—allowing for a larger scale.
What Can We Expect from ‘Greenland 2: Migration’?
As the Garrity family fought to reach the rumored sanctuary in Greenland, they were forced to navigate harrowing obstacles and moral gray areas, capturing the desperation and extremes people will face to protect their loved ones in a crisis. Speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub last year, Waugh shared his vision for the follow-up, saying he sees it as a natural conclusion to the Garritys’ journey rather than just another installment.
“It’ll be about who survived and how they rebuild the earth when everything has been completely burned to the ground,” Waugh explained. “It’s a beautiful way to give closure to the Garritys’ story and show where they go from here. So, do you call it a sequel? Yes — but to me, it’s more like the final chapter of what this story has to say.”
