James Gunn Confirmed to Be Writing, Directing the Next Installment in the Super-Family!!

The new DC Comics cinematic universe exploded into theaters this summer with Superman, and is set to return next year with Supergirl. But what does the future hold beyond that? Warner Bros. boss David Zaslav gave us a peek behind the Source Wall when he revealed that James Gunn, the DC head honcho who penned and helmed Superman, is putting on both capes again for the next entry in the “Super-Family” story.

According to reports, during the company’s quarterly earnings call, Zaslav stated that fan-favorite Gunn will write and direct “the next installment in the Super-Family.” What that means, of course, is up for debate. It could simply mean a Superman 2, which has certainly been justified by the film’s rapturous reception and boffo box office; Gunn has also said that he’s busy “sequel writing.” However, it could also be a team-up of Superman and his Kryptonian cousin Supergirl, who dropped in at the end of his film to pick up her dog and tease her own solo feature. There are other options, of course: Since the character made his debut in 1938, Superman has accumulated a massive extended family of ancillary characters, from Superboys to Supergirls to Superwomen. Even Krypto the Superdog, who became a fan-favorite in Superman, could fit the bill.

What’s Next For the DCU on the Big Screen?

Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, hits theaters on July 26, 2026; helmed by Craig Gillespie and penned by Ana Nogueira, it will also feature Jason Momoa as the spacefaring bounty hunter Lobo. Shambling into theaters on September 11, 2026, is Clayface, a horror film centering around the classic Batman villain; it will star Tom Rhys Harries as an actor who tries to stay relevant with a miracle formula, but becomes a horrific creature instead. James Watkins directs from a script by horror maestro Mike Flanagan. After that, things get murkier. Nogueira is also set to write scripts for Teen Titans and Wonder Woman features, while a film based on the edgy antiheroes of The Authority has stalled. Andy Muschietti is attached to The Brave and the Bold, which will introduce Batman and Robin to the new cinematic DC landscape; it will not be connected to Matt ReevesThe Batman or its upcoming sequel.

Meanwhile, on TV, the new DCU‘s first TV series, Lanterns, is in production; it will star Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Hal Jordan and John Stewart, two members of the intergalactic peacekeeping organization the Green Lantern Corps. In the realm of animation, another season of Creature Commandos, the series about a combat-hardened unit of monsters and misfits, has been greenlit.

A new Super-Family movie written and directed by James Gunn is in development.
