‘The Paper’ Trailer Previews the Long-Awaited ‘The Office’ Spin-Off!! Check It Out!!

The Office documentary crew is back — and this time, they’re chasing headlines instead of paper sales. Peacock has dropped the first official trailer for The Paper, the long-awaited workplace comedy from The Office co-creator Greg Daniels and Nathan for You‘s Michael Koman, revealing a September 4 premiere date. The first four episodes will drop at launch, with two new episodes arriving every Thursday through September 25. The new series follows the familiar documentary film crew — yes, the one that once captured the chaotic charm of Dunder Mifflin — as they find a fresh subject: a struggling Midwestern newspaper called The Toledo Truth Teller, and the publisher trying to save it from extinction. Leading the charge is Star Wars star Domhnall Gleeson, who brings a very different energy to the boss’s chair than Michael Scott or David Brent ever did. He might actually be competent.

Gleeson is joined by an ensemble that includes Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus), Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, Tim Key, and The Office alum Oscar Nuñez, who returns as a series regular and is seriously unimpressed to see the camera crew again. Guest stars for Season 1 include Eric Rahill, Tracy Letts, Molly Ephraim, Mo Welch, Allan Havey, Duane Shepard Sr., Nate Jackson, and Nancy Lenehan.

What Is ‘The Paper’ About?

The show’s logline teases a similar blend of heart and absurdity that made The Office an Emmy-winning hit:

The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch finds a new subject when they discover a historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it.”

Peacock’s official poster for The Paper called the fictional newspaper “The First Draft of History,” but its fate hangs by a thread. That desperation is front and center in the trailer, which features Gleeson’s character trying to modernize the newsroom while dealing with quirky employees, chaotic interviews, and the ever-present threat of layoffs. And yes, there’s a conference room — and yes, people will cry in it.

Behind the scenes, Daniels and Koman serve as co-creators, showrunners, writers, and executive producers, with Daniels directing the pilot. Additional directors for the 10-episode season include Ken Kwapis, Yana Gorskaya, Paul Lieberstein, Tazbah Chavez, Jason Woliner, Jennifer Celotta, Matt Sohn, Dave Rogers, and Jeff Blitz. Executive producers also include Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas.

The Paper premieres with four episodes on September 4, exclusively on Peacock, with two new episodes dropping every Thursday through September 25.
