‘One Night Only’: Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner to Lead ‘Anyone But You’ Director’s Next Romance Movie!!

After making the highest-grossing live-action William Shakespeare adaptation of all time with his steamy flick Anyone But You starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, director Will Gluck is going back to what worked for his next film. He’s landed yet another Top Gun: Maverick star, Monica Barbaro, alongside Masters of the Air alum Callum Turner to lead the new romantic feature One Night Only for Universal, per a new report by Deadline. The project comes at the end of a long search for Gluck‘s big follow-up to his $220.3 million success, which premiered back in 2023 and helped launch both its leads into new levels of superstardom. In addition to the hot new couple, it was also announced that the film will hit theaters in just under a year on August 7, 2026.

One Night Only is not another Shakespeare adaptation, but it is based on a script by Travis Braun that topped the 2024 Black List. Gluck will write his own draft of the screenplay, but it’s unclear at this time what his version will look like compared to the first iteration. The original story imagines a world where premarital sex has been outlawed, save for one night every year when everyone has a limited time to legally hook up. During this hot-and-heavy Purge, two strangers are scrambling to find that special person they want to spend their one night with before it’s too late.

Thanks to his track record, and especially because of Anyone But You, Gluck reportedly had a lot of choices to pick from for his stars. Both Barbaro and Turner were the immediate frontrunners, though, and for good reason. Barbaro just received her first Academy Award nomination for last year’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, where she delivered a scene-stealing performance as Joan Baez. Between that and Top Gun: Maverick, her star has risen fast, with her recently appearing in Season 2 of FUBAR with Arnold Schwarzenegger and currently working on Luca Guadagnino‘s next starry feature, Artificial. Turner, meanwhile, has Rose of Nevada and the Miles Teller and Elizabeth Olsen love triangle Eternity next on the docket, with the lead role in Apple TV+‘s hotly anticipated Neuromancer adaptation on the horizon.

What Else Has Gluck Done Aside From ‘Anyone But You’?

Rom-coms have been Gluck‘s forte for some time now. Well before his loose Much Ado About Nothing adaptation scored big at the box office, he directed Emma Stone in the coming-of-age teen film Easy A, released in 2010. That would then be followed up in 2011 with the feel-good Friends with Benefits, pairing up Mila Kunis and pop star Justin Timberlake. He also has a pair of animated family comedies to his name in the James Corden-led Peter Rabbit films, but One Night Only is more in the vein of what he does best as a director.

One Night Only premieres on August 7, 2026.
