Following the success of James Gunn’s Superman, which is coming to digital soon, one of the film’s breakout stars is getting his own set of spin-offs. DC has announced a series of shorts titled Krypto Saves the Day, based on the popular canine who debuted opposite David Corenswet in the debut DCU film. The best part? The first film in the series, Krypto Saves the Day: School Bus Scuffle, is now streaming on YouTube ahead of Superman’s digital arrival on Friday. Krypto will lead the more animated shorts following School Bus Scuffle, with Halloween Havoc, Package Pandemonium, and Coastal Catastrophe all coming soon. Krypto has been one of the most beloved aspects of Superman since its premiere over a month ago, so the canine getting a few small projects to call his own was a no-brainer.
Superman premiered during a stacked month in July, and although it had the most work to do in terms of fighting back against the public perception, it has been the most successful release, by far. The film debuted to immaculate scores that have held strong at 83% from critics and 91% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, enough to earn it both the “Certified Fresh” and “Verified Hot” labels. The film has also grossed $581 million at the global box office at the time of writing, and it’s poised to pass $600 million in the coming weeks as it also contends with digital purchases. Still, it’s safe to say the film has been a major success, enough so to buy James Gunn plenty of years to continue to execute his DCU vision, which will continue next year with Supergirl.
Krypto Could Be Coming Back to the Big Screen Sooner, Rather Than Later
After starring in Superman earlier this year, Krypto will likely return to the DCU soon. Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock as the titular hero, will debut next year on June 26. After Alcock’s brief cameo in Superman, where she shows up at the Fortress of Solitude to take Krypto home, it seems likely that the pup will have a role in the 2026 DCU film. Jason Momoa, who can currently be seen in Chief of War on Apple TV+, will also star in Supergirl as Lobo after previously playing Aquaman in the DCEU.
