It’s been so long since the sequel to World War Z has been announced that the movie has become an urban legend. However, an important new development might finally take the movie out of its 12-year-old development hell. In light of the new Paramount-Skydance merger, some projects received a new priority, and it looks like the Brad Pitt (F1) blockbuster is about to see the light of day.
What makes it seem like World War Z 2 is now a reality is the fact that Paramount-Skydance is moving several other titles around in order to fast-forward their production. These titles include the threequel to Top Gun and the follow-up to the Star Trek franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the company’s executives have a plan to release 15 movies a year, which means that several titles are bound to be revisited soon. Co-film Chief Josh Greenstein name-dropped World War Z, so, at the very least, the franchise has been on his mind.
Back when it was announced, the World War Z sequel made perfect sense: the movie grossed more than half a billion dollars worldwide, which made it the highest-grossing zombie movie ever — a title that the 2013 movie still holds. However, production never seemed to move forward until the point that fans stopped believing in it. Is Paramount-Skydance rioting everyone’s emotions just for the sake of creating some buzz, or is this actually happening? We’ll believe it when we see it.
What Else Is Paramount Bringing Back?
All that info came from a meet-and-greet event in which Paramount top executives discussed the future of the company. Paramount exec David Ellison recognized the importance of valuing their own IP and stated:
“One of our biggest priorities is restoring Paramount as the No. 1 destination for the most talented artists and filmmakers in the world. Great filmmakers make great movies.”
Again, per THR, Ellison also called Top Gun 3 a “top priority” and mentioned other franchises such as Transformers and Star Trek — the latter has been absent from the silver screen for almost a decade. Ellison suggested a focus on horror movies, R-rated comedies, and a certain focus on original titles.
World War Z was directed by Marc Foster (White Bird), and the cast featured Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who), Ruth Negga (Presumed Innocent), James Badge Dale (Hightown), Mireille Enos (Lucky Hank), and David Morse (We Were Liars). Despite the announcement, Paramount-Skydance is yet to reveal more details of World War Z 2, including the expected release window.
