Mother of God! Pour yourself a liter of cola, because the Super Troopers are back. The third film in the comedy franchise from the Broken Lizard comedy troupe is meow in production, with the film’s original cast and a trio of newcomers set to make the highways safe. The film is expected to begin rolling at the end of this week; no release date has yet been announced by distributor Searchlight Pictures.
According to reports, all five members of Broken Lizard (Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske) are back, as are Brian Cox (Succession) as cantankerous commander Captain John O’Hagen and Marisa Coughlan (Freddy Got Fingered) as Chief Ursula Hanson. Newcomers for the third film include Andrew Dismukes (Saturday Night Live), Nat Faxon (Loot), and Chace Crawford (The Boys). Chandrasekhar is back to direct, while Broken Lizard will write the film as well as resuming their on-camera roles. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Chandasekhar said in a statement, “Broken Lizard is excited to help bring the theatrical comedy back. To America, we say, ‘It’s mustache-growing time!’.”
What Is ‘Super Troopers’ About?
Released in 2001, Super Troopers centers around a barracks of oddball state highway troopers in the fictional town of Spurbury, Vermont. The prank-loving group stumbles into a serious drug-smuggling case, bringing them into a jurisdictional conflict with the local Spurbury police department, led by Bruce Grady (Daniel von Bargen). However, with the help of Spurbury’s underappreciated dispatcher, Ursula, they soon discover that the Spurbury police are in on the whole scheme. Made for a meager budget of $1.5-3 million USD, the film grossed $23.2 million at the box office and became a cult sensation on home video. A sequel followed in 2018; it saw the troopers being reassembled to police a parcel of land that had been accidentally ceded to Canada years before, bringing them into conflict with the Mounties and a crooked local mayor (Rob Lowe). Produced for $13.5 million, some of which was raised via crowdfunding, it earned $32 million.
The Broken Lizard comedy troupe was formed in Hamilton, New York’s Colgate University in 1989. Following the success of Super Troopers, they have collaborated on a number of films, including Club Dread, Beerfest, and The Slammin’ Salmon. Their most recent production was Quasi, an extremely loose adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Super Troopers 3 will begin filming later this week.
