‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Gets a ScreenX Poster!! Check It Out!!

Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson have stepped into a nightmarish funhouse in Collider’s exclusive look at the ScreenX poster for The Conjuring: Last Rites. It would appear as though the duo’s characters — Lorraine and Ed Warren, respectively — are coming face-to-face with a different version of themselves, and it might not be one that they like or recognize. The image is just a tease of the terror to come when the Michael Chaves-helmed feature comes crashing into cinemas on September 5, marking the final time that Farmiga and Wilson will appear on the big screen as the notorious paranormal experts.

Dubbed as the final case of the real-life Warrens, The Conjuring: Last Rites will focus on the story of the Smurl family from West Pittston, Pennsylvania. It was there that, over nearly two decades, the family was faced with an alleged haunting that stumped numerous experts in the field, leading the Warrens to come and check things out for themselves. From what we’ve seen in the trailers, it appears that the movie will loop things back to the beginning of the Warrens’ career, after they realize that the sinister entity plaguing the Smurls is one they’ve encountered before.

Although they would go on copious amounts of tours, give loads of talks, and open up their haunted museum, the Smurl family haunting is largely considered to be the end of the road for the pair’s “big” haunting investigations, making this the perfect story for Farmiga and Wilson to ride off into the sunset on. Along with Farmiga and Wilson, the movie will also feature the talents of Mia Tomlinson (The Lost Pirate Kingdom) as Ed and Lorraine’s daughter, Judy, and Ben Hardy (Bohemian Rhapsody) as Judy’s boyfriend, Tony Spera. The heavy involvement of Judy in the plot of Last Rites might be the most fictional part of the dramatized telling, as the Warrens’ daughter famously didn’t have the same zest for the supernatural as her parents did, rather choosing to stay as far away from it as possible.

As part of Collider’s Exclusive Preview event, we debuted a new picture from Last Rites and even got a chance to chat with its helmer. During their conversation, Collider’s Sam Coley uncovered some incredibly important and promising information about the upcoming movie, with Chaves sharing:

What I wanted to do — what everyone wanted to do — was really a return to back-to-basics haunted house story that really made The Conjuring this incredible horror franchise. And I think that was something that, even though I think we enjoyed the idea of the thriller, you know, cat and mouse, supernatural serial killer element of Conjuring 3, I think that for the end we wanted something that felt like a return to that classic Conjuring experience.”
