‘Blue Eye Samurai’ Season 2 Featurette Teases the New Journey!! Check It Out!!

Netflix didn’t take long after the first poster was dropped to pull back the curtain even more on the hotly anticipated Season 2 of Blue Eye Samurai. Work is underway on bringing the mixed-race swordmaster Mizu’s (Maya Erskine) next chapter to life, but the streamer was able to share a first-look featurette as part of its adult animation slate being shown off at Anime NYC 2025. It’s the best look yet at where her journey heads next after the Season 1 finale saw her set sail for London in search of the remaining men she’s after. She’s about to enter a new world full of fresh dangers that will test her skills with the blade in new ways.

Created by Logan writer Michael Green and Amber Noizumi, Blue Eye Samurai is a classic tale of vengeance, following Mizu as she aims to kill the four white men who stayed in the country illegally while the borders were closed. Thanks to her heritage, which has made her a pariah in 17th-century Japan, she knows one of them has to be her father, and she seeks revenge for how they’ve ruined her life. Season 1 saw her dice through her foes, concealing her gender along the way to more easily avoid discrimination, until she finally confronts one of the men — the Irish trader Abijah Fowler (Kenneth Branagh). She didn’t kill him just yet, though, instead opting to use his knowledge, connections, and resources to sail across the ocean in search of the other two remaining men, whom Fowler gave up in an attempt to save his life.

Between Mizu’s ongoing quest for vengeance and identity and the many evolving stories of supporting characters like Ringo (Masi Oka) and Akemi (Brenda Song), there’s a lot to unpack in Season 2. Netflix‘s Director of Adult Animation, Dylan Thomas, teased at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival earlier this year that the scripts and storyboards arecrazier, they’re bigger, and even more heart-wrenching” than what viewers saw in Season 1. For Mizu, especially, entering Europe will be a test not only because she’s on foreign soil, but also due to her internalized hatred for the land and how it connects to her birth. Although the goal remains the same, the game itself has changed, and there will be surprises in store as the story unfolds.

‘Blue Eye Samurai’ Became One of the Defining Adult Animation Hits of 2023

Expectations will be high for the show’s return, thanks to the boundless acclaim Season 1 received. Between the starry cast, the depth with which it explored its characters’ identities, and the gorgeous animation from French animation studio Blue Spirit, Blue Eye Samurai was a hit with critics and audiences alike, with respective 97% and 93% scores on Rotten Tomatoes. It also came away with six Annie Awards, four Creative Arts Emmys, and a Peabody nomination. Even in Netflix‘s deep adult animation catalog that includes the likes of Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, it was a defining hit for the platform that only figures to keep growing as the creators eye a three-season arc for their story. Season 2 will also get a critical reinforcement on the directing end in the form of Ultraman: Rising alum John Aoshima.

There is no release date yet for Blue Eye Samurai Season 2. Check out the first-look featurette in the player above.
