True Detective is opening the Cage. Nicolas Cage is in talks to be one of the leads of the upcoming fifth season of the acclaimed HBO anthology crime series. The role, which is not yet finalized, would be Cage’s second major TV role: his first, the lead role in Prime Video‘s upcoming Spider-Man Noir series, is now in production.
According to reports, the series, which tracks a different team of detectives each season as they tackle a shocking crime, will make its first trip to New York City, after previous stops in Louisiana, California, the Ozarks, and Alaska. Cage will play Henry Logan, a New York City detective investigating a case in Jamaica Bay on Long Island. He joins exalted company on the series; acclaimed actors like Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali, and Jodie Foster have led the series across its four previous seasons. The series, which aired its last season in early 2024, is aiming to begin production this year with an eye on a release date some time in 2027.
What Has Nicolas Cage Been Working on Lately?
The ever-busy Cage, who was once quoted as saying “I have respect for the dollar,” remains as booked and busy as ever. After an acclaimed turn as a monstrous serial killer in last year’s Longlegs, he starred in the Australian set psychological thriller The Surfer and the Western Gunslingers (with True Detective alumnus Stephen Dorff) earlier this year. Next year, he’s starring with FKA twigs and Noah Jupe in the French horror film The Carpenter’s Son; the David Mamet-penned The Prince, with J.K. Simmons and Giancarlo Esposito; and the David O. Russell sports biopic Madden, in which he’ll play NFL coaching legend and video game pioneer John Madden. He’s also set to take on his first TV leading role, as he takes the role of an extra-dimensional noir-tinged Spider-Man, who he voices in the Spider-Verse films, and brings him into live action.
True Detective‘s fifth season will be masterminded by Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid), who directed and co-wrote last year’s acclaimed fourth season of the series, the Alaska-set Night Country. It achieved the best ratings of any season of True Detective for HBO, even outpacing the acclaimed first season back in 2014.
The fifth season of True Detective is in development; it is projected to begin filming this year, and will be released in 2027.
