KPop Demon Hunters is gearing up for a comeback. The animated musical sensation that took Netflix by storm is moving forward with a sequel, as Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation enter deal talks to bring the creative team back together. The move follows the film’s record-shattering performance on the platform, where it has become Netflix’s most-watched movie of all time.
With over 236 million views worldwide, the movie has toppled Red Notice from the top spot on Netflix’s most-watched list and established itself as a cultural phenomenon. The story of HUNTR/X, a K-pop girl group who juggle stardom with secret lives as demon slayers, resonated with a massive global audience. Beyond streaming, the film’s soundtrack has also exploded onto the charts: four songs landed on the Billboard Hot 100 top ten, while the breakout single “Golden” hit No. 1, marking the first girl group to top the chart since Destiny’s Child.
From Record-Breaking Smash to Sequel Talks
According to a new report, Netflix and Sony are in active deal talks, which should reunite directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans for the sequel. Kang has already hinted at her eagerness to expand the mythology, particularly exploring more of Mira and Zoey’s backstories. Though casting for the sequel has not yet been confirmed, Arden Cho has teased that unresolved storylines, like the fate of Jinu, could serve as emotional anchors for the next chapter.
The sequel talks move forward amidst KPop Demon Hunters proving its staying power in theaters. Earlier this month, Netflix hosted a sing-along theatrical event across more than 1,700 theaters worldwide, and the limited release turned into a phenomenon of its own, grossing nearly $20 million in two days. For Netflix, which has been searching for original franchises, the sequel is more than just a follow-up. It’s a test case for how the streamer can take a surprise hit and turn it into a lasting brand and a franchise that rivals larger Hollywood studios. Animated films have traditionally been tough for Netflix to franchise compared to competitors like Disney, but the massive response to KPop Demon Hunters suggests the company may finally have a series that can continually draw in audiences on their hands.
While the sequel is still in deal talks and no release timeline has been set, one thing is certain: the demon-slaying idols of HUNTR/X aren’t done yet. After dominating streaming, Billboard, and even the box office, they’re preparing for an encore that could prove lightning can strike twice for Netflix and expand a one-off hit into a lasting franchise.
