Last Christmas was packed to the brim with exciting projects on the BBC. From Wallace and Gromit returning in A Vengeance Most Fowl to an Outnumbered Christmas special, there was plenty to choose from, although the eyes of the world were focused steadily on the final outing of James Corden and Ruth Jones‘ iconic British sitcom Gavin and Stacey.
With 12.3 million viewers watching it live on the day, becoming the Beeb‘s most-watched show on Christmas Day in 16 years, Gavin and Stacey‘s final outing was a rousing success, so much so that production companies were desperate not to let Corden and Jones‘ formidable partnership die with their magnum opus. Thankfully, we now know it won’t, with it reported that both are set to join forces once again to pen a brand-new comedy for Apple TV. In a deal worth a staggering $10.8 million, the series is set to feature ten episodes, an all-star British cast, and begin production next year with the aim of debuting in 2027. An insider has given more information about the upcoming project, revealing:
“In what has unquestionably been a pretty miserable year for Brits, there is finally something to cheer – a new James and Ruth co-production. As you might expect, it is uplifting, gentle, and very funny. They wanted to bring something full of heart and warmth back to screens; water cooler moments for all the family. Naturally there was a lot of interest around the script and a major bidding war to land this production. But James already had an excellent relationship with AppleTV+. It acquired the rights to his Carpool Karaoke, and it made sense to go in this direction. This time, with a new format and new characters, they wanted to let an international audience enjoy their work.”
James Corden’s Latest Box Office Venture Has Flopped
Corden is known to have been in several of the worst movies of the 21st century, with his latest box office venture falling to similar critical and audience backlash. The children’s film Smurfs, which featured the likes of Rihanna, John Goodman, Corden, and Nick Offerman, not only opened to poor reviews but also earned a “rotten” 21% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. At the box office, the film didn’t fare much better, with its reported $58 million production budget turning into just $117 million globally, from a domestic haul of $31 million and a further $86 million internationally.
James Corden and Ruth Jones are reportedly teaming up once again. You can catch the pair’s classic comedy Gavin and Stacey right now on Peacock.
