Movies based on a popular video game IP are having a moment. Gone are the days when fans of the games would cite the “video game movie curse” when an adaptation is poorly received, it took a while, but films like Super Mario Bros, A Minecraft Movie, and Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, among others, have changed the narrative with their cutting-edge visuals and a good story. So naturally, fans of the BioShock video game are eagerly waiting for Netflix’s adaptation, and producer Roy Lee has a great update for them.
While the movie helmed by Francis Lawrance has seen many delays due to numerous reasons like Hollywood strikes, script rewrites, and a significant shift in Netflix’s executive structure, Lee confirmed that it’s still pretty much on track and teased “Netflix wants us to keep everything under wraps. But it’s definitely going to be based on the first ‘BioShock‘ game,” while speaking to The Direct.
Lee and Lawrence are currently busy promoting their new Stephen King adaptation, The Long Walk, but BioShock fans shouldn’t be excited, given that the director has prior commitments (and a big one) before he could start working on the video game adaptation. He further revealed, “Well, ‘The Long Walk’ became a reality because ‘BioShock’ was delayed for a little bit where we had to do some more script work.” He elaborated,
“And so as the script work is being done, we shot ‘The Long Walk,’ and he was already committed to doing the next ‘Hunger Games’ movie. And so it’s just waiting for him whenever the ‘Hunger Games’ is completed, and the script is just being worked on right now.”
What to Expect from the ‘BioShock’ Movie
Fans are usually skeptical when a project is getting numerous delays, but such is not the case with BioShock; the makers have always given a positive update about the film. On a closer inspection, one will find most reasons for the delay are out of anyone’s control. So as and when BioShock arrives, it’ll be a feast for fans with its rich lore and a richer world. Lee previously told Collider‘s Steve Weintraub that the movie is getting made despite the budget being reduced due to restructuring at the company. He explained, “It was originally done with the previous regime, and the new regime has lowered the budgets on some things, so we’re doing a much smaller version of the movie. But it’s eventually going to get made with Francis Lawrence directing. It’s gonna be on a more personal point of view as opposed to a grander, big, epic movie.”
