‘Mr & Mrs. Smith’ Season 2 Put On Indefinite Hold!!

It looks like fans of Prime Video‘s Mr. and Mrs. Smith may have to wait a little while longer to find out what happened after season one’s cliffhanger finale…or a lot longer. The second season of the spy romance series is on indefinite hold. Sophie Thatcher and Mark Eydelshteyn were set to star in the new season of the hit series.

According to reports, production of the new season is on indefinite hold thanks to cast issues. While Thatcher (Yellowjackets) and Eydelshteyn (Anora) had been announced by the press as being the two new leads of the series, their deals had not yet been officially signed. The production was initially set to begin filming this fall in Los Angeles, a change in scenery from the New York City-set first season, but that has now been pushed forward indefinitely. The series is loosely based on the 2005 Brad PittAngelina Jolie film of the same name, about a married pair of assassins. It was a critical and ratings hit when it premiered in February 2024, and garnered sixteen Emmy nominations, winning two; one for stunt coordination, and one for guest star Michaela Coel.

What Happened in the First Season of ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’?

As the series opens, two strangers, Michael (Donald Glover) and Alana (Maya Erskine) are recruited by a mysterious organization to work as spies. As part of their cover, they must pose as a married couple, John and Jane Smith. Over the course of their series, their fake marriage becomes increasingly real, and they begin to question the missions they anonymously receive via text message. They also encounter another pair of Smiths (played by Parker Posey and Wagner Moura), foreshadowing the fate met by a third pair of Smiths (Alexander Skarsgård and Eiza González) who the audience sees perish in a gunfight as the series opens. In the season finale, they’re ordered to terminate each other, but ultimately face off with the other Smiths in a brutal gunfight. Who survives, if anybody, remains up in the air.

This isn’t the first time Mr. and Mrs. Smith has run into creative difficulties. Initially, the series was to have starred Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), with both stars serving as creators alongside Francesca Sloane (Atlanta). However, Waller-Bridge exited the project over creative differences, and Erskine was cast in her place.

Production of the second season of Mr. and Mrs. Smith has been delayed indefinitely.
