‘Star Wars: Starfighter’: New BTS Finds Ryan Gosling & Flynn Gray Stranded At Sea!! Check It Out!!

We’ve got a new look at Star Wars: Starfighter, the mysterious new Star Wars movie that’s now filming. Director Shawn Levy posted a behind the scenes shot on his Instagram, showing stars Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray afloat in the Mediterranean. The film is set to be released on May 28, 2025.

In the shot, which is captioned with “Somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea #starfighter,Gosling and Gray are aboard some sort of water craft or floating platform, both clad in their costumes for the film. They’re both grimy and degloved, as if they’ve been hard at work getting something (maybe a starfighter, as per the title) to work. The seaside setting is a departure from many recent Star Wars works, which have returned again and again to the arid desert planet of Tattooine. Star Wars has filmed in the Mediterranean before, however: various locations in Italy stood in for the planet Naboo, the picturesque homeworld of Padmé Amidala and Sheev Palpatine, in The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.

What Do We Know About ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’?

The latest Star Wars movie in the production pipeline, Starfighter will be set further along the Star Wars timeline than any previous film; it will take place five years after the defeat of the First Order and the presumably final death of Emperor Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker. In addition to Gosling (Drive) and Gray (Wednesday), the film is also set to star Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge), Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners), Jamael Westman (The Essex Serpent), Daniel Ings (The Gentlemen), and Amy Adams (Arrival). Matt Smith (Doctor Who) and Mia Goth (MaXXXine) will play the film’s villains. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the title implies that the outer-space dogfights that have been a staple of the franchise since its inception will play a major role in the film. The film’s script is by Jonathan Tropper (Your Friends and Neighbors).

No Star Wars films have been released since The Rise of Skywalker controversially concluded the sequel trilogy in 2019. However, one is due out next year: The Mandalorian and Grogu will bring Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young ward to the big screen for the first time. The series is a spin-off of the popular Disney+ series The Mandalorian.

Star Wars: Starfighter will be released on May 28, 2027.
