The Summer I Turned Pretty has come to an end…or has it? We’re returning to Cousins after all, but with a twist. Amazon MGM Studios has greenlit a film version of the iconic series, continuing Belly Conklin’s (Lola Tung) story now that she has made her choice between the Fisher brothers. On the hit series, the finale had fans wondering if Belly would end up with Conrad Fisher (Christopher Briney) or if she would go back with her ex-fiancé Jeremiah (Gavin Casalengo).
The film will tell the final chapter of Belly’s story, which [spoiler alert!] sees Belly and Conrad returning to the beach house in Cousins. But not before we got to see Belly live her life in Paris without either Fisher boy trying to control her every move. As part of the news, Courtenay Valenti, the head of film, streaming, and theatrical for Amazon MGM Studios, spoke about the announcement. “The Summer I Turned Pretty has struck a chord with audiences everywhere, creating moments of joy, nostalgia, and connection that have made it a global sensation,” she said.
Vernon Sanders, Global Head of Television at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, also spoke about the success of the series, saying, “We’re proud of the series’ extraordinary success and couldn’t be more excited to partner again with Jenny Han to bring fans an unforgettable next chapter.” The series is based on the books by Jenny Han, who also spoke about the news. “There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due. I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans,” said Han. Han will co-write the new movie with Sarah Kucserka.
There Is Still More to Belly’s Story in The Books
In Han‘s books, Belly does end up with Conrad Fisher, which happened on the show. But unlike the final moments between them in the series, the books do take their love story one step further. Jeremiah, who gave Conrad his blessing to go after Belly, is seen attending Belly and Conrad’s wedding, and the two are very happy together. So happy, they run into the ocean together. Could this mean that we get to see a Belly/Conrad wedding after the disaster of Belly’s attempted wedding with Jeremiah? Or will Han give us something new for Belly and Conrad?
We still have a lot to learn about the movie but at least we’re going back to Cousins.
