Following the success of Superman on HBO Max over the weekend, James Gunn has just shared a major update on the DCU’s future. Following 2026’s Supergirl, Gunn recently confirmed that the next chapter in the Superman saga is Man of Tomorrow, which is coming to theaters on July 9, 2027. This afternoon, Gunn took to his personal social media account to share a picture of the second draft of the Man of Tomorrow script, seemingly confirming that Braniac will be the feature villain in the 2027 film. The cover of the script shows an X-ray of someone’s head, showing a large brain.
Fans were stunned when James Gunn announced Man of Tomorrow, largely because its arrival was much earlier than anyone was expecting. We know that the events of Superman will lead right into Supergirl next year, and while not officially confirmed, it’s heavily speculated that David Corenswet’s Superman will have some small role in the film. Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El will headline Supergirl upon its release on June 26, 2026, and she’ll also star alongside Jason Momoa. After playing Aquaman for years in Zack Snyder’s DCEU, Momoa will now play his dream character, Lobo, in Gunn’s DCU.
Plot details about Man of Tomorrow are being kept under wraps, but Gunn has confirmed that Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult will star as the leads. The two will team up to take on a larger threat, now all but confirmed to be Braniac. Additional casting for the film will likely be held under wraps until production begins, which should be before the end of the year. The DCU’s first major team-up movie could be forming before our eyes right now.
How Does ‘Peacemaker’ Connect to the DCU?
Peacemaker formed a connection with the DCU before Season 2 began streaming on HBO Max, thanks to a brief cameo in Superman. John Cena’s Christopher Smith shows up to talk down on Superman once the world thinks that he’s there to rule them, not serve them. However, it further strengthens this connection in the premiere with the presence of Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced).
There are still three episodes remaining in Peacemaker Season 2, and Gunn has personally confirmed that he thinks the final three episodes are some of his finest work. Even members of the press were only sent the first five episodes, so fans can rest assured that the final three episodes are going to be explosive.
