‘GoldenEye’: Pierce Brosnan’s Best James Bond Movie Sets Theatrical Re-Release for 30th Anniversary!!

This fall, you’ve got a new mission: see Pierce Brosnan‘s best James Bond movie in theaters. GoldenEye, Brosnan‘s 1995 Bond debut, is being remastered in 4K and re-released on the big screen for its 30th anniversary. It will hit selected theaters worldwide on James Bond Day — October 3, which marks the anniversary of the release of the first Bond film, Dr. No. In the United States, GoldenEye will screen exclusively at Alamo Drafthouse theaters.

Widely considered to be Brosnan‘s best outing as Bond, GoldenEye was a watershed moment for the Bond franchise. 1989’s Licence to Kill was a relative financial disappointment, and the franchise had become entangled with MGM‘s ownership crisis. Six years had passed without a Bond film, during which time the political axis of the world had dramatically shifted. It also featured a changing of the guard: not only did Timothy Dalton decline to return as Bond, necessitating the casting of Brosnan, but longtime Eon Productions head Cubby Broccoli stepped down, putting his children Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson in charge. With director Martin Campbell at the helm, however, the film revitalized the franchise for the 1990s and established Brosnan as a bonafide action star.

What Is ‘GoldenEye’ About?

In his first post-Cold War adventure, Bond takes on Janus, a new crime syndicate rising from the ashes of the Soviet Union. Heading to Moscow on the orders of the new M (Judi Dench), Bond uncovers a plan to use a Soviet-era superweapon, the GoldenEye satellite, to unleash a devastating electromagnetic pulse on the world. More devastating for Bond, however, is learning that his seemingly long-dead MI6 colleague, Alec Trevelyan, alias 006 (Sean Bean), is the head of Janus; scarred by his final mission, he wants revenge on Bond and the world. Aided by Russian computer tech Natalya Simonova (Izabella Scorupco) and uncouth CIA agent Jack Wade (Joe Don Baker), Bond will have to use all his skills, wits, and high-tech gadgets to stop Trevelyan and his allies, including amoral hacker Boris (Alan Cumming) and sadistic enforcer Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen).

The Bond franchise’s six-year absence clearly made hearts grow fonder; the film grossed $356 million USD at the box office on a $60 million budget, making it the biggest Bond hit yet. It also holds an 80% Fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes.

GoldenEye will return to theaters on Friday, October 3; tickets and showtimes are available at 007.com.
