‘Lethal Weapon 5’ Gets Disappointing Update!!

Fans have been waiting patiently for Lethal Weapon 5 for more than 25 years now, but a new update on the film might mean that it isn’t coming anytime soon, if ever. Mel Gibson stars alongside Danny Glover in all four Lethal Weapon movies, which were released between 1987 and 1998. The final film had a famously troubled production, with the budget ballooning to nearly $150 million, but the film still grossed $285 million globally. There have been talks of Lethal Weapon 5 for years now, but the film hasn’t taken any concrete steps forward in a while.

MovieWeb recently sat down for an interview with Allan Ungar, who directed Gibson in the 2022 movie Bandit, and asked him about the status of a fifth Lethal Weapon movie. “You know, I ended up speaking with Mel [Gibson] quite a bit about his intentions for the fifth one [Lethal Weapon], which, you know, I don’t know where it’s at in the development world, with Warner Brothers and New Line.” However, he did confirm that Gibson does have an idea of where he wants to take Lethal Weapon 5, “He’s always had a plan. I think his plan right now, though, is to get back into the Passion of the Christ [sequel], which is shooting in Italy, so I think he’s going to be busy with that for a while.

Ungar continued, “I don’t know if we’ll ever see Lethal Weapon 5, but I also don’t know, I don’t know that we need to see it. Yeah, [Lethal Weapon 4] kind of wrapped it up quite poignantly.Gibson confirmed last year that he would be directing the fifth and final Lethal Weapon movie, taking over duties from Richard Donner, who passed away in 2021. Later in the year, though, he highlighted the many obstacles to getting any film on its feet, and the uncertainty about whether Lethal Weapon 5 would happen was clear.

What’s Going On With ‘The Passion of the Christ’ Sequel?

Gibson began filming The Resurrection of the Christ earlier this year in Italy, which will return Jim Caviezel to his signature role of Jesus. The film is only part one in the story, which is eyeing a March 26, 2027, release date. Part Two is expected to be released shortly after, on May 6, 2027. Both movies will film back-to-back and wrap production sometime next year.
