‘The Social Reckoning’: ‘Social Network’ Follow-Up Gets a New Title as Cast and Release Date Get Confirmed!!

The Social Network isn’t cool. You know what’s cool? The Social Reckoning. That’s the just-revealed title for the follow-up to the acclaimed 2010 drama about the rise of Facebook and its founder, Mark Zuckerberg. It’s also been given a cool release date: October 9, 2026, a little more than a year from now. Aaron Sorkin, who penned the script for the original film, will handle both scripting and directing duties this time around, taking over the helmer’s chair from David Fincher.

According to reports, Sorkin is the only announced returnee for the film, which will center on the release of The Facebook Files — a damaging series of Wall Street Journal articles that revealed the inner workings of Facebook‘s operations. Zuckerberg, who was played by Jesse Eisenberg in the first film in an Oscar-nominated role, will be played this time around by fellow Oscar nominee Jeremy Strong. Mikey Madison, who took home an Oscar for her fearless performance in Anora earlier this year, will play Facebook whistle-blower Frances Haugen, and The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White, who’s likely to net an Oscar nod playing the title role in this fall’s Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, will star as reporter Jeff Horowitz. Comedian and actor Bill Burr will also appear in an as-yet undisclosed role.

What Else Will be Released in October 2026?

The 2026 release calendar is still in flux, but given The Social Reckoning‘s impressive pedigree, October puts it in a prime position to contend for next year’s awards season. Its October 9 release date has it coming out on the same weekend as the Jessica Chastain horror movie Other Mommy, and the animated fantasy The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. The previous weekend will see Alejandro G. Iñárritu‘s first English-language film in a decade hit theaters; the as-yet-untitled film will star Tom Cruise. October 2 will also see the Colleen Hoover thriller Verity, with Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, hit the big screen. The following week, the 16th, will feature the video game adaptation Street Fighter and the survival thriller Whalefall, while the final week of October is currently the domain of Remain, a Jake Gyllenhaal supernatural romance that is the product of an unlikely collaboration between M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks.

The Social Network was a surprise hit in 2010, earning $224 million USD on a $40 million budget, and earning a glowing 96% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It garnered eight Oscar nominations and won three, for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score (for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross), and Best Film Editing.

The Social Reckoning will be released in theaters on October 9, 2026.
