‘The Great North’ Cancelled After Five Seasons!!

Cozy evenings with the Tobin Family are about to come to an end. Less than one month after Season 5 finished its run, Fox has officially canceled the animated comedy The Great North. The move wasn’t entirely unexpected, given the network’s decision to bring American Dad! back to the Animation Domination lineup and give it, The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, and Family Guy four more seasons apiece. With the Jon Hamm-led Grimsberg and Dan Harmon-created Krapopolis also renewed for additional runs, that left a bit of a schedule crunch. That all but doomed the Nick Offerman-led series to the cold, especially once Fox unveiled its fall schedule in May without the series listed.

Premiering back in 2021, The Great North brought a more wholesome air to Fox‘s animated lineup, following the Tobin family who live together in the fictional Alaskan town of Lone Moose. Beef Tobin (Offerman), the family patriarch and a fisherman, tries his best to raise his four children and, ultimately, keep the weird little unit together as a single father in the icy environment. Each episode sees them experiencing hijinks, dysfunction, and support from one another on their journeys through life together. Not unlike Bob’s Burgers, the beating heart of the show is the familial love between each of the Tobins, with Beef being a bit overbearing in his deep love for his kids.

Beyond its themes, the series also more directly shared DNA with its burger-flipping colleague. It, too, is produced by Milo Productions in addition to 20th Television Animation and features Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard as an executive producer. Sisters Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux created the show after previously penning episodes of Bouchard‘s hit series, with Minty Lewis also getting credit on The Great North as a co-creator. Offerman leads a strong voice cast that also features Jenny Slate, Will Forte, Dulcé Sloan, Paul Rust, Aparna Nancherla, and Alanis Morissette as Judy Tobin’s imaginary friend, Alanis Morissette.

‘The Great North’ Was a Fox Fan Favorite

The Great North has been a consistent fan favorite throughout its run, boasting an overall audience score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes after kicking off with a much-lauded first season. Collider‘s Gregory Lawrence gave the inaugural run a B at the time, saying of the series, “The Great North is comfort viewing of the highest caliber, a glass of the same hot beverage before seeing the same friends at the same place, feeling lovingly ensconced by it all.” Since that strong start, the show has been a fixture of Hulu‘s San Diego Comic-Con setups and its Animayhem section, though the mountains are no longer likely to make the trip. “We’re so grateful for everything Wendy, Lizzie, Loren, and the amazing cast and crew put into The Great North,Michael Thorn, president of Fox Television Network, said of the show in a statement. “It’s difficult to say goodbye, but we’re thankful for the five hilarious seasons The Great North brought to the iconic Animation Domination lineup.

The Great North is available to stream on Hulu.
