‘Spy 2’: Paul Feig Directorial Gets Unexpected Sequel Update From Rose Byrne!!

Jason Statham’s highest-rated movie of his career just got a surprising sequel update out of nowhere from one of his co-stars. In 2015, Statham starred alongside Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law, and Rose Byrne in Spy, a slapstick action comedy that follows a desk-bound CIA analyst who goes undercover in the world of deadly arms trading to prevent a global catastrophe. The film was written and directed by Paul Feig, and it earned a Certified Fresh 94% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 78% from audiences. It also grossed $235 million globally against a $65 million budget.

Entertainment Tonight recently caught up with Byrne at the New York Film Festival and asked her why there hasn’t been a Spy sequel yet, despite many fans pushing for one over the years. “Let’s get it started, I agree.” She said, “I think there was supposed to be one in the works, but it never eventuated. I really love that film. It’s been rediscovered more and more. People have come up to me and gone, ‘I really love that movie.’ It’s like, an absolute treasure. It’s such a fun watch. [Jason] Statham’s so funny. It’s like, my husband’s in it — Bobby [Cannavale]. It’s so funny.

Byrne isn’t the only one involved in Spy who is interested in pursuing a sequel. Writer/director Paul Feig, who is famously against sequels, expressed interest in doing another Spy movie just earlier this year. He said if there was ever another one of his movies that he would do a sequel for, it would be Spy. Feig said this on the press tour for Another Simple Favor, the sequel to his 2018 thriller starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick.

Jason Statham Is Working on Another Sequel Right Now

Paul Feig may not be interested in working on sequels, but Jason Statham is. Statham just recently began filming on The Beekeeper 2, the sequel to his hit 2024 thriller directed by David Ayer. Ayer is not returning to direct The Beekeeper 2 due to a scheduling conflict, and he will instead be replaced by Timo Tjahjanto. Statham has also starred in plenty of other action sequels over the years, including most recently reprising his role as Jonas Taylor in Meg 2: The Trench. He’s also played other roles, like Deckard Shaw, Arthur Bishop, and Lee Christmas multiple times.
