‘Murder, She Wrote’: Jamie Lee Curtis led Remake of Beloved Murder Mystery Sets Dec 2027 Release Date!!

At long last, Murder, She Wrote is coming back. Universal has spent three years now developing a movie adaptation that would resurrect Jessica Fletcher on the big screen, albeit with Jamie Lee Curtis taking up the mantle of the star that made her an iconic sleuth, Angela Lansbury. After what’s been a rocky process to revisit the beloved CBS murder mystery series, this year has finally seen its next chapter gain some serious momentum, with Jason Moore brought aboard to helm the feature back in January. Now, a date has finally been penciled in for the long-gestating project, and it’s not terribly far off.

Universal has dated Murder, She Wrote‘s big screen outing for December 22, 2027, erasing an upcoming Untitled Universal Event Film from the calendar to clear space. It’s another big step forward for the project that will pit Jessica against a couple of box office titans in Avengers: Secret Wars and The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, hitting theaters the weekend prior. Given the sheer concentration of blockbuster power there, something may eventually move to avoid the competition, but for now, next year’s holiday season is looking packed. Murder will also share a date with a new Sony Pictures Animation comedy, Buds.

Little is known about the actual plot of the movie, but it’s expected to be a fitting new story hearkening back to Jessica’s days in the idyllic, fictional town of Cabot Cove. From 1984 to 1996, Lansbury‘s Fletcher put her knack for writing mysteries to work cracking them, using her intellect to find the real criminals with greater efficiency than any official investigator could. Across 12 seasons, she had just about seen it all, but with time and a fresh perspective, Curtis will look to carry the torch with a bit of a reinvention to fit the modern day. “There is nobody like Angela Lansbury,” the Oscar winner told the British television series This Morning in an interview about the project last year. “Nobody anywhere, any time. That is a singular talent, so this has to be a different version of it; this will be a modern version, it will be fun, and we’ll shoot it next year.”

Who Else Is Working on ‘Murder, She Wrote’?

Moore remains best known for directing the first Pitch Perfect film in 2012, though he hasn’t taken the reins of a feature since 2022 with Prime Video‘s Jennifer Lopez-led action rom-com Shotgun Wedding. As of late 2024, however, he was attached to direct the live-action Rugrats movie. For Murder, She Wrote, he’s working with a script from Dumb Money writers Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo. Hot off their wildly successful adaptation of Andy Weir‘s Project Hail Mary, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are also producing with Amy Pascal through Lord Miller’s overall deal with Universal.

Murder, She Wrote hits theaters on December 22, 2027.
