Warner Bros. is yearning to return to the mines. A sequel to this year’s blockbuster hit A Minecraft Movie is in the works, and has already set a release date. The studio has set aside a prime summer landing spot of July 23, 2027, for the next level of the video game adaptation. No plot details or casting have yet been announced, but Napoleon Dynamite‘s Jared Hess, who helmed the first film, will return to direct; he’ll also co-write the script with Chris Galletta (The Kings of Summer). There’s no indication of whether any of the cast from the first film will return, but Jason Momoa is still attached to produce the sequel, indicating that washed-up video game champ Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison will return.
So far, the 2027 movie calendar is quite sparse, with only a handful of films yet announced. The month will kick off with Warner Bros.’ own “not a Superman sequel” DC Comics movie Man of Tomorrow, which will see the Man of Steel teaming up with his archfoe Lex Luthor; it is set to be released on July 9. On the 23rd, WB already has a movie on the schedule: Bad Fairies, an animated musical from Centaurworld‘s Megan Nicole Dong. With Minecraft muscling in, that film may move elsewhere. However, Minecraft will feature stiff competition from another film scheduled to premiere on the 23rd: Disney‘s The Simpsons 2, the belated sequel to the first big-screen outing for America’s favorite dysfunctional animated family. Its predecessor, The Simpsons Movie, grossed $536.4 million USD back in 2007. The only other film scheduled for July 2027 is the horror sequel A Quiet Place Part III, which will bow on July 30.
What Happened In ‘A Minecraft Movie’?
A Minecraft Movie centered around Henry (Sebastian Hansen) and Natalie (Emma Myers), who moved to a quiet rural community after their mother’s death. Henry eventually makes his way to Garrett Garrison’s video game store, where he finds two artifacts, formerly the possessions of Steve (Jack Black); combined, they transport him, Natalie, Garrett, and real estate agent Dawn (Danielle Brooks) into the cubical dimension Overworld. There, they find Steve, who disappeared into Overworld years ago; he helps train them in the art of reshaping the terrain of Overworld by combining its cubes into a variety of configurations. However, they also have to contend with the porcine witch Malgosha (Rachel House), who wants the power of Steve’s artifacts.
A Minecraft Movie was a huge success at the box office this spring. It grossed $957.8 million on a $150 million budget, becoming the third-highest grossing movie of the year to date. The sequel announcement comes as Warner Bros. is reportedly the target of a merger from Paramount.
The sequel to A Minecraft Movie will be released on July 23, 2027.
