Jason Statham’s next action movie just got a thrilling update from one of his co-stars. Not even two weeks ago, Black Bear announced it would be taking Statham’s Shelter to theaters next year on January 30. This came after another Statham action movie, Mutiny, was moved out of its January release date and pushed back to the summer. Shelter follows a man living by the sea in solitude who decides to rescue a girl from certain death, setting off a chain of events that leads to a vicious attack on his own while his past catches up with him. Naomi Ackie (Mickey 17) will co-star with Statham in Shelter.
Also tapped for a role in Shelter is Bill Nighy, who is best known for his role as Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. Nighy recently caught up with MovieWeb to chat about his new project with Harlan Coben, Lazarus, and he was asked if he could tease anything about Shelter. “It was great, and it was shot in Ireland. It was so great to meet Jason. He was very generous and welcoming to the whole crew and everybody. It was a very cool gig,” he said.
He also went into detail about his role in the film, and it sounds like he won’t be shaking hands with Statham in Shelter. “I’m not playing a nice guy. I don’t get employed to be nice. But it was very good, and I got to work with Jason.” Statham may display a somewhat rugged persona in his movies, but Nighy is the latest in a long line of his co-stars who have spoken to what a delight he is to work with on a film set.
Jason Statham’s ‘Shelter’ Is Connected to Gerard Butler’s ‘Greenland’
Ric Roman Waugh directed Shelter with a script from Ward Parry. Waugh also teamed up with Gerard Butler in 2020 for Greenland, the hit disaster thriller that co-stars Morena Baccarin. He’s also returning to direct the sequel, Greenland: Migration, which is the film that took the slot of Statham’s aforementioned Mutiny. Waugh most recently worked with Butler on Kandahar, an action thriller that had a run of success on Netflix before being removed from the platform shortly after. Waugh is even famous for his work on Snitch (Dwayne Johnson) and Shot Caller (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau).
