‘The Office’ Australia Remake Cancelled After One Season!!

On October 18, 2024, Prime Video released the Australian adaptation of The Office, bringing new life to this British classic with an Aussie twist. And while it managed to pick up a fair reception from critics, the fate of this mockumentary sitcom has been decided. A year after its first season was released, Prime Video has decided to axe the show.

The Nightly reported that Prime Video has decided not to continue The Office Australia after it remained in “purgatory” since its release in 2024. The Office Australia was the franchise’s 13th international adaptation, starring its first female lead, played by Felicity Ward. Also starring in this show were Edith Poor (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), Steen Raskopoulos (Black Mirror), Josh Thomson (Young Rock), Shari Sebbens (Thor: Love and Thunder), and Zoe Terakes (Talk to Me).

The Office Australia followed Hannah Howard (Ward), the Managing Director of Flinley Craddick – a packaging company in Australia, who was told that her branch was shutting down. In order to save her “work family,” she goes into “survival mode,” by making changes that not everyone would like, like return to office mandates, and making promises that she couldn’t keep, all in an effort to meet impossible targets. While the show was well-received by critics, earning a 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it was poorly received by audiences, earning a low 40% audience rating.

Other TV Shows That Were Given the Australian Treatment

The Office is one of a handful of shows that had an Australian adaptation. While most of them tend to be reality shows, like the Bachelor franchise, NCIS is another TV franchise that made an Australian spin-off called NCIS: Sydney. This version of NCIS features two NCIS agents, working alongside the Australian Federal Police, as they solve crimes related to the deaths of U.S. Navy personnel. The show has already aired its first two seasons and its third installment premiered last week.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has adapted some of Australia’s most popular programs, giving them an American twist. One example is Kath & Kim, a sitcom that has a high audience score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and won a Logie Award for “Most Outstanding Comedy Program” in 2003. The U.S. version of the show aired in 2008, starring Molly Shannon and Selma Blair. While it did generate high viewership numbers, which eventually declined, it received a low critics’ score of 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.

All eight episodes of The Office Australia are available to stream on Prime Video now (excluding the U.S.).
