‘The Phantom of the Opera’: Guillermo del Toro Wants to Remake Classic Horror Movie!!

Guillermo del Toro is no stranger to the horror genre, and recently teased what movie villain he would love to tackle next if given the chance.

While being interviewed by Inverse during the premiere of his upcoming movie Frankenstein, del Toro was asked what misunderstood villain he would like the chance to tackle next. The legendary director was quick to give an answer, and cited a classic story.

“The Phantom of the Opera,” del Toro said. “Because it’s such a classic tale, but I would do it differently,” he said. “I have a couple of ideas but for now, I’m going into crime and stop motion.”

Originally released in the 1910 novel by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a disfigured musical genius living beneath the Paris Opera House, and his obsession with a beautiful singer. The story was adapted into a Broadway musical in 1986, and subsequently became the longest-running show in Broadway history, with over 10,000 performances to its name.

As for del Toro, rumors suggest that he’s working on some sort of crime thriller as his follow-up to Frankenstein. Previously, del Toro noted that the film, titled Fury, will also star Oscar Isaac, and is a “very cruel, very violent” thriller.

“I’m writing it right now, and it’s called Fury, and essentially it’s going back to [the] sort of thriller aspects of Nightmare Alley – very cruel, very violent,” del Toro said in September. “Like My Dinner with Andre but [with] killing people after each course.”
