Get ready to twitch your nose for this next bit of entertainment news! Fox is officially putting a re-imagining of Bewitched in development. The series will be a reimagining of the 1960s series that starred Elizabeth Montgomery as the witch who married a human and has to navigate the trials and tribulations the come with it. The new series with Sony Pictures Television will come from Judalina Neira (The Boys, Daisy Jones and the Six) and executive producer Doug Robinson. A Bewitched reboot was the first project from Neira that she pitched with her Famous Last Words Productions after signing a first overall deal with Sony Television last year. Sony Television and Fox Entertainment will co-produce the series. The series will be a shift from a half-hour sitcom to an hourlong re-imagining. The new show will follow Samantha and Darrin’s love story in a “heartfelt” reimagining. Deadline says in the new series, “they’ll have to navigate their disapproving parents, walk a tightrope of cultural clashes, and bridge the divides between their families and worlds.”
‘Bewitched’ Got a Star-Studded Re-Imagining in 2005
Twenty years ago, the 1960s television series got a different reimagining of sorts. The 2005 film, Bewitched, starred Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell in a Nora Ephron-directed romcom. The premise featured a real-life witch (Kidman) trying to live a normal life, while accidentally being roped into playing Samantha in a reboot of the beloved sitcom with a washed-up egotistical actor (Ferrell) playing Darrin. Other cast members include Shirley MacLaine, Michael Caine, Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, and Kristin Chenoweth. As production continues, the pair fall in love for real and have to navigate the very conflicts they’re paid to act out. It’s a tongue-in-cheek campy movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but will tide any Bewitched fan over until more news about the new reimagining comes to light. The synopsis for the 2005 Bewitched is as follows:
“Movie star Jack Wyatt (Will Ferrell) has hit a rough patch in his career. Looking to make a comeback, he signs on to play the role of Darrin in a movie version of the popular 1960s sitcom “Bewitched.” Jack insists that an unknown is hired to play Darrin’s better half, the beguiling witch-housewife Samantha, so the studio finds an up-and-comer named Isabel Bigelow (Nicole Kidman). Once shooting begins, though, Jack learns that Isabel was cast too well — since she actually is a witch.”
No cast has been announced for the Bewitched reimagining from Judalina Neira.
