This month, get ready for another exciting entry in the case files of Charles Nieuwendyk. Ted Danson is back as an amateur undercover detective in the Season 2 trailer of A Man on the Inside. The new season will premiere on Netflix on November 20. In the new trailer, Charles is continuing his new career as a private eye, but he longs for a more interesting case. He finds one when Wheeler College president Jack Berenger (Max Greenfield, New Girl) walks into the office to see Charles’ boss, Julie Kovalenko (Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Chicago Med). His laptop is missing, and it just happens to have something on it that’s worth $400 million.
Charles is sent undercover again, this time at Wheeler as a professor; there, he encounters a number of suspects, none more suspicious than billionaire alum Brad Vinick (Gary Cole, Office Space). However, he also finds the stirrings of romance for the first time since his wife died, in the form of Mona (Mary Steenburgen, Danson’s real-life wife). He’s going to have to assemble a crack team of operatives to get to the bottom of this…comprised of the senior citizens from his last assignment. The new season also co-stars Jason Mantzoukas (The League), Constance Marie (Switched at Birth), Linda Park (Star Trek: Enterprise), David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck), and Jill Talley (SpongeBob SquarePants).
What Happened in the First Season of ‘A Man on the Inside’?
Retired professor Charles Nieuwendyk, still reeling from his wife’s death, is urged to get out and do something by his daughter, Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia). He finds an ad from private eye Julie, who’s looking for an older man to infiltrate the Pacific View Retirement Community, where a necklace has been stolen from a resident. The awkward but affable Charles becomes very popular in the community, befriending solitary backgammon enthusiast Calbert (Stephen McKinley Henderson, Dune), volatile couple Virginia and Elliott (All in the Family‘s Sally Struthers and Blood Simple‘s John Getz), and even administrator Didi (Stephanie Beatriz, Brooklyn Nine-Nine). And while he eventually finds the thief and realizes no malice was intended, he has to repair the new bonds he’s made that were shattered in the wake of his deception being revealed.
A Man on the Inside was loosely inspired by the 2020 Chilean documentary The Mole Agent, about a man who was hired by a detective to infiltrate a retirement home. A Man on the Inside was created by sitcom veteran Michael Schur, of The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine fame; he also created The Good Place, which also starred Danson.
Season 2 of A Man on the Inside will premiere on Netflix on November 20, 2025.
