A weekend hunting trip is about to become a war. Apple TV has unveiled the first trailer for The Hunt, a new French-language thriller following four longtime friends who get caught up in something sinister while trying to enjoy their weekly excursions into the woods. On one particular Sunday, they cross paths with another group of hunters, seemingly out enjoying the weekend just like them. When this other party opens fire on them, though, they fight back, sparking a deadly back-and-forth with ramifications they could never imagine. They vow to take the secret to their graves, but days later, it becomes impossible to hide what happened once the mysterious hunters follow them home for revenge.
The footage opens on Franck, played by three-time César Award winner Benoît Magimel, and his friends walking through the woods with their dog, and immediately noting the other hunting party starting their day later than any hunter theoretically should. What started as a peculiarity becomes a glaring red flag when the shooting starts, and one member of their group is shot. In self-defense, Franck turns his rifle toward the assailants and seemingly kills one of the men. The entire incident has them arguing all the way home in the car about whether to call the police or whether any of them messed with people they shouldn’t have. When they try to settle back into their lives and hide what happened to their families, though, the attack finds new and ominous ways of creeping back into their lives, from run-ins with the police to threatening letters and gory displays. With Franck’s wife catching on to the mystery at hand and the hunters taking more drastic and deeply personal measures in their quest for vengeance against the four friends, they decide there’s only one course of action — return to the woods and finish what they started.
The Hunt‘s trailer brings everything to a thrilling conclusion with high-stakes action as the groups of hunters go to war. It’s only made more intense with Franck and his friends’ families also getting targets on their heads, putting everything on the line. At the helm of Apple‘s latest international project is César Award-nominated creator and director Cédric Anger, best known for his 2014 true crime thriller Next Time I’ll Aim for the Heart. Joining him on the series are executive producers Isabelle Degeorges and Clémentine Vaudaux, alongside Alexis Barqueiro and Sidonie Dumas for the Lupin production banner Gaumont.
‘The Hunt’ Brings Together a Decorated French Cast
While Magimel takes center stage, The Hunt is rife with French stars, including another two-time César Award winner in Mélanie Laurent, who previously appeared in Quentin Tarantino‘s Inglourious Basterds. They’re joined by Damien Bonnard, Manuel Guillot, Cédric Appietto, Frédéric Maranber, Angelyna Danabe-Mignot, Paul Beaurepaire, Yann Goven, Sarah Pachoud, and Patrick De Vallette. With so much award-worthy talent involved, Apple TV hopes the series can fit right in with its other acclaimed French productions, like the multilingual International Emmy Award-winning Drops of God and the acclaimed Liaison starring Vincent Cassel.
The Hunt premieres with two episodes on Apple TV on December 3, with new episodes following every Wednesday. Check out the trailer in the player above.
