
Anne Rice fans, are you ready? As you wait for more Interview With the Vampire or Mayfair Witches, or even are all caught up on Talamasca: The Secret Order, you’ll be pleased to know, a new adaptation of one of her most underrated works is coming to the screen. Tom Ford is set to write and direct Cry To Heaven. The movie will be based on the 1982 Anne Rice novel of the same name. The cast confirmed so far is also stacked, with Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Adele, Ciarán Hinds, George MacKay, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Paul Bettany, Owen Cooper, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Hunter Schaffer, Josephine Thiesen, Thandiwe Newton, Theodore Pellerin, Daryl McCormack, Cassian Bilton, Hauk Hannenmann, and Lux Pascal all confirmed to be starring in the 18th century set film. Ford will write, produce, and direct the film through his Fade To Black production company. The film is in pre-production, looking to shoot in Rome and London. Principal photography will begin next year, and Ford is looking at a late 2026 release date. Part of the synopsis for the book Cry To Heaven is as follows:
“Following the stories of two men castrated to ensure their perfect soprano voices, Cry to Heaven is a historical novel in 18th century Italy. Guido Maffeo is castrated at age six and enters the conservatory. He becomes a star until he loses his voice. When his voice is gone, he becomes a teacher, searching for a boy who can fulfill his lost dream. He comes to Venice and his life is intertwined with Tonio Treshi.”
What Other Anne Rice Adaptations Are There?
Rice is most well-known for her work Interview With the Vampire and the other books in the Vampire Chronicles. The book was adapted in 1994, starring Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and Kirsten Dunst. In 2022, a series starring Sam Reid and Jacob Anderson premiered on AMC and is now heading into its third season. Season three will follow The Vampire Lestat and has been renamed as such. Her Immortal Universe has expanded beyond Interview With the Vampire, with Mayfair Witches and most recently, Talamasca: The Secret Order. Mayfair Witches is now also heading into Season 3, where they will explore the series’ ties to the Salem Witch Trials. Talamasca: The Secret Order premiered last month, with new episodes every Sunday on AMC. The series follows a secret society burdened with keeping supernatural creatures like vampires and witches in check.
