The Devil’s work is never done — rather, it’s only just beginning. Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 premiered to strong reviews earlier this year, marking a return of the grittier Marvel action introduced in the beloved original Netflix series. However, there were still traces of the original plans for the Disney+ series from before Dario Scardapane reworked things to better align with the show that made fans fall in love with Charlie Cox‘s Man Without Fear. Season 2, on the other hand, will get a clean slate and a chance to fully realize the vision Scardapane and company had for Matt’s next chapter. Empire Magazine has now shared a new image and a tease from producer Sana Amanat about how freeing it was to be able to build everything from scratch.
“The landscape was open, and that was so liberating,” Amanat said about Season 2. “We were like, ‘We can do whatever we want.’” One of the biggest goals was to bring the scope back to focus on Murdock and Fisk. While Matt amasses his vigilante allies, Fisk will be grappling with all the power he finally has at his disposal. The question remains what he plans to do with it beyond just trying to squash out forces like Daredevil and the Punisher. “What does it mean for Fisk when he’s gotten everything he wants?” the producer added. “When you give a person whose thirst cannot be quenched his most valued treasure, is it enough? Or does he squeeze his treasure too hard?” Fisk’s biggest weakness may ultimately be his own greed, leaving some vulnerabilities for Matt, someone who knows the Kingpin very well, to exploit.
Jessica Jones Brings a New Dynamic to ‘Daredevil: Born Again’
Perhaps the most exciting addition to Season 2, especially for those hoping for a Marvel‘s Defenders reunion, is the addition of Krysten Ritter, who reprises her role as Jessica Jones. Attendees at New York Comic-Con got their first look at the superhero-turned-P.I. in action earlier this year, marking the first time the character has appeared on-screen since her series came to an end in 2019. Ritter has previously teased to Collider‘s Tania Hussain that she’ll reach new heights in the Disney+ series, not only “kicking ass,” but also peeling back the layers of what makes her tick. She’s certain to join forces with Matt once more as part of the Devil’s Army, though Amanat teases it’s not because she’s happy about it.
“[Jones] isn’t necessarily a team-up kind of person,” the producer continued. “So the reason she’s back is because it feels like it’s very personal.” Amanat also believes Jones adds a little something else to Born Again to keep the series punchy without falling completely into darkness. “She brings edginess and lightness — Daredevil can be very dark and dramatic, and she cuts through the BS in a really fun way.”
