‘God of War’: ‘Shōgun’ Director Joins Prime Video’s Much-Awaited Adaptation!!

Prime Video‘s much-anticipated God of War adaptation is adding more firepower behind the camera as the series begins to ramp up. Fresh off his Emmy win for last year’s Shōgun, director Frederick E.O. Toye has joined the creative team, according to a new report, and is set to helm the first two episodes of the video game series. His addition comes as the show has begun pre-production in Vancouver and is now casting, meaning things are moving quickly towards finally bringing Kratos and Atreus to life. It’s now also officially confirmed that it’ll begin with a two-season order at the streamer, as previously mentioned.

This latest development for God of War is perhaps its best yet, after a rocky development that spanned over three years. Late last year, Sony brought in prolific television creator Ronald D. Moore to spearhead a creative overhaul of Prime Video‘s adaptation of one of its most prized PlayStation franchises. Since then, it’s been off to the races, with Moore and the team working on scripts throughout the year and expressing excitement over the deep mythology of the games. The two-season order is a show of confidence in what’s been built so far, and the sheer scale of the action-adventure series under Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship Productions.

Moore‘s adaptation will heavily follow the plot of the Norse-set 2018 installment of the franchise, now following an older, bearded Kratos away from the Greek pantheon he slew his way through in the previous games. Alongside his young son, Atreus, he sets out on a journey through Midgard to spread his wife Faye’s ashes atop the highest peak in the nine realms in commemoration of her last wish. Throughout the adventure, Kratos does his best to raise his son while reckoning with his own past as a violent killer of gods and, ultimately, learning a bit from his son about how to be a better human. Christopher Judge was rumored to reprise the leading role that won him Best Performance at the Game Awards for the sequel, God of War: Ragnarök, but he has since debunked that notion.

What Else Has Frederick E.O. Toye Worked On?

In landing Toye, God of War now has a veteran of television who’s been attached to some of the biggest series in recent memory. While he most notably took home an Emmy for directing the episode “Crimson Sky” from Shōgun, he’s been a frequent partner of Prime Video over the years, helming episodes of The Boys, The Terminal List, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, and one of the most successful video game adaptations to date, Fallout. He also earned an Emmy nomination for his work on Westworld and has contributed to everything from Person of Interest to The Good Wife, The Walking Dead, Watchmen, See, and more. He’ll be a perfectly steady hand to have at the wheel to ensure the acclaimed games are done justice.
