HBO is returning to Westeros again soon, but this time, it’s a much more gentle stroll with some new friends. HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on beloved author George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, will premiere in January, and we’ve just been given a new, final trailer for the series’ more lighthearted tour through Westeros. This prequel unfolds around 100 years before Game of Thrones and follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (played by Peter Claffey), a widely-mocked hedge knight, and Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), his small but mysterious squire. Fans of the books know Egg isn’t just any kid tagging along — and the dynamic between this unlikely duo helps deliver what Martin calls one of his “favorite” Westeros stories he ever wrote.
A century before the events of “Game of Thrones,” two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.
Why Is ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ George R. R. Martin’s Favorite?
Calling Dunk and Egg “favorites of mine,” Martin wrote:
“It’s as faithful an adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for… This one ranks as one of the best stories I’ve ever written, and I am so so so pleased that Ira Parker… and our astonishing cast and crew did right by them.”
He also teased fan favorites:
“Wait until you guys meet the Laughing Storm. And Tanselle Too-Tall.”
Martin reaffirmed that this is just the beginning — and that he intends to write more novellas after finishing The Winds of Winter, joking, “Don’t worry, I am sure you folks will remind me.”
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres on January 18, 2026, on HBO Max. Check out the trailer above.
