‘Steps’: Fist Image Teases a Unique Take on Cinderella’s Evil Step-Sisters!! Check It Out!!

Cinderella’s stepsisters are often depicted as wicked tormentors of the eventual princess, who rarely get a happy ending of their own. That’s about to change, however, with Netflix‘s new animated spin on the fairytale, Steps. The streamer announced the new film today with an image introducing Lilith, who is less evil and more misunderstood by everyone around her. Along with the first look, it was also confirmed that comedian and actress Ali Wong would be returning to the platform to voice the stepsister, with Stephanie Hsu joining her as her sibling, Margot. The two sisters will get their chance to shine when the feature arrives sometime in 2026.

Steps centers on Lilith, who’s in deep trouble after being accused of hijacking the Royal Ball with a stolen magic wand. Though she didn’t do it, her villainous reputation leaves no one believing her, and the situation only gets worse when she accidentally turns Margot into a frog. With the kingdom now left in the hands of a prince-obsessed mean girl, she’s forced to team up with Cinderella for once to save their home and ensure a happily ever after for all. Along the way, they’re also joined by “a surprisingly dreamy troll,” who’ll be instrumental to fixing their fractured fairytale world.

Wong and Netflix have been frequent partners of late, with their most notable collaboration, the darkly comedic anthology series Beef, earning two Emmys for the actress. Working together, their works have spanned a wide range of genres, from the beloved rom-com Always Be My Maybe, which she co-wrote with her co-star Randall Park, to the recent supernatural animated series Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld. Lending her voice to Netflix animations is nothing new for the Oscar-nominated Everything Everywhere All At Once star Hsu either. She was most recently heard on the platform in Adam Sandler‘s Leo and the bloody hit series, Blue Eye Samurai. The rest of the cast around them will be announced at a later date.

Who Is Behind ‘Steps’?

At the helm of Steps is a duo of promising up-and-coming animator Alyce Tzue and Raya and the Last Dragon co-director John Ripa. Tzue is a Student Academy Awards gold medal winner, and this will mark her feature directorial debut. The pair also worked with a starry production team to make their fairytale a reality, including Amy Poehler, alongside Jane Hartwell and Kim Lessing. It’s the latest to come from Netflix‘s vaunted animated film slate, following a year in which Kpop Demon Hunters became the platform’s biggest hit in its history and just one month after the debut of Alex Woo‘s acclaimed In Your Dreams.

Steps premieres on Netflix sometime in 2026. Check out the first image above.
