Matthew Rhys is the mayor of a small town with a big secret in the first look at Widow’s Bay. The Americans star leads the new horror comedy series from AppleTV with a sterling TV pedigree. It will premiere with three episodes on April 29, 2026; it will then air weekly until its season finale on June 17.
The first image of Rhys sees him play Tom Loftis, mayor of the small New England island town of the title. Life isn’t easy in Widow’s Bay: there’s no wi-fi, the cell reception stinks, and the residents are largely convinced that the town is plagued by an ancient curse. As you can imagine, the town’s economic outlook is bleaker and grayer than a November morning in Cape Cod. However, despite being a weak and cowardly sort of guy, Loftis is determined to prove to his teenage son that he isn’t, and thus he forges ahead with his plans to transform Widow’s Bay into a tourist destination. Surprisingly, it seems to be working…at least, until that curse starts kicking in again. Horror and hilarity ensue.
Who Are the Creatives Behind Widow’s Bay?
Widow’s Bay was created and written by Katie Dippold; a writer for MadTV and Parks and Recreation, she’s also penned the scripts for The Heat, 2016’s Ghostbusters reboot, and Haunted Mansion. Emmy-winner Hiro Murai (Atlanta, The Bear, Mr. and Mrs. Smith) will executive produce, as well as directing five episodes; other directors lined up for the series include Ti West (MaXXXine), Sam Donovan (Down Cemetery Road), and Andrew DeYoung (Friendship). Other executive producers include Carver Karaszewski, Claudia Shin, and Rhys. In addition to Rhys, the series will also star Kate O’Flynn (My Lady Jane), Stephen Root (Barry), Kingston Rumi Southwick (Presumed Innocent), Kevin Carroll (Snowfall), and Dale Dickey (Winter’s Bone).
Rhys has been quite busy as of late. This year he starred in the Agatha Christie miniseries Towards Zero, Netflix‘s hit thriller miniseries The Beast in Me, and the Rosamund Pike psychological thriller Hallow Road. Next year, he’ll star in Silent River, a Prime Video thriller series with John Krasinski; the second season of AppleTV‘s courtroom drama Presumed Innocent; and will lend his voice to the animated series Invincible as the villainous Dinosaurus.
Widow’s Bay will premiere with three new episodes on Wednesday, April 29, 2026; new episodes will then premiere every Wednesday until the season finale debuts on June 17.
