‘Man of Tomorrow’: Lars Eidinger to Play Brainiac in James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Follow-Up!!

James Gunn has found his Brainiac. The villain of the upcoming Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow will be played by German actor Lars Eidinger, as announced by director Gunn on social media today. Man of Tomorrow will be released on July 9, 2027.

In a post on Twitter, Gunn welcomed Eidinger to DCU, saying that he “rose to the top” in their search for a portrayer of the classic computerized DC villain, who will be making his first-ever big-screen appearance in the upcoming film. Eidinger was a familiar presence in German film and television before breaking out with the Kristen Stewart drama Clouds of Sils Maria; he has subsequently made notable appearances in the films High Life and Dumbo, and the TV series Babylon Berlin, Irma Vep, and All the Light We Cannot See. Recently, he has appeared in the Noah Baumbach films White Noise and Jay Kelly.

What Do We Know About ‘Man of Tomorrow’?

The film is a follow-up to last summer’s Superman, but Gunn insists that it is not exactly a sequel. David Corenswet will reprise his role as Superman, while Nicholas Hoult will rejoin him as his arch-foe Lex Luthor. However, the film will not have them at odds, but very reluctantly working together to face a common foe, who we now know will be Brainiac. According to Gunn, the film is as much Luthor’s as it is Superman’s; it’s possible that Luthor is vying to be the titular “man of tomorrow” as much as Superman is, despite it being a long-standing sobriquet for the latter. The Justice Gang from Superman, which includes Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan) is also slated to return in some capacity.

While there’s a long wait for Man of Tomorrow, Gunn‘s new cinematic DC Universe has a number of projects set to hit screens both big and small in 2026. On the big screen, fans can look forward to Supergirl in the summer and Clayface in the fall, while Lanterns, a new take on the mythos of the Green Lantern Corps, will debut on HBO later in the year.

Man of Tomorrow will be released on July 9, 2027.
