‘Assassin’s Creed’: ‘Chernobyl’ Director to Helm Netflix’s Live-Action Series!!

The Assassin’s Creed series in the works at Netflix just secured its director from one of the best miniseries’ of all time. News broke yesterday that Johan Renck, famed for his work directing episodes of the critically acclaimed miniseries Chernobyl, will serve as lead director on Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed show. The show will be led by Toby Wallace and Lola Petticrew, who were recently announced as the headlining stars. They join Zachary Hart and Laura Marcus, who will star as series regulars, and additional casting is almost certainly coming as the show gets closer to the start of production.

Plot details about Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed series are currently being kept under wraps, but it’s confirmed to follow a war between two dangerous factions, one vying for power, and the other for freedom. These two factions are currently unnamed, but it will most likely focus on the Templars and the Assassins, the two factions commonly warring amongst each other in the Assassin’s Creed game franchise, on which the show is based. Other factions, such as the Cult of Kosmos, the Hidden Ones, and the Order of the Ancients have also been present throughout the Assassin’s Creed games, but the Templars and the Assassins remain the two most common denominators.

The Assassin’s Creed series also marked the first collaboration between Netflix and Ubisoft, which inked a deal in 2020 to produce content together. It’s still unclear at this time exactly when Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed series will be released or even when it will begin production. But the fact that it’s adding new creatives and cast members by the day means that the start of filming is likely coming sooner rather than later.

Is the ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Movie on Streaming?

Netflix’s new Assassin’s Creed series won’t be the first time that a studio has attempted to bring the famous video game to life on the screen. Ubisoft tried in 2016, when it released a feature film adaptation starring Michael Fassbender. However, the film was met with an extremely divisive reception, with many criticizing it for being an unfaithful adaptation of the source material. It managed to gross over $240 million at the box office against a $125 million budget to avoid becoming a complete financial failure. Fassbender‘s performance in the film is widely appreciated, but the overall project is viewed as a mountain of wasted potential.
