‘God of War’: Prime Video Series Casts Teresa Palmer to Play Sif!!

Just days after finding the God of War, Prime Video‘s video game adaptation has now summoned the goddess of earth, harvest, and family. Teresa Palmer, best known for starring in A Discovery of Witches and playing opposite Nicholas Hoult in Warm Bodies, has been tapped to join Ronald D. Moore‘s Norse-set series as Phoebe/Sif, the wife of Thor, per a new report. She’s the second major casting decision made for the much-anticipated take on the iconic PlayStation franchise, joining Ryan Hurst, who will lead as Kratos. Still to be found, however, is his son, Atreus, as pre-production gets underway in Vancouver.

That Palmer is playing Sif is certainly intriguing since the goddess never appears in the 2018 God of War reboot, which kicked off the Norse mythology-based chapter of the series, and which Moore appears to be adapting first for the show. She does, however, have a significant role to play in the sequel, God of War: Ragnarök. Although she’s married to Thor (coincidentally voiced by Hurst in the games), she eventually finds herself on the side of Kratos and Atreus upon learning the true depths of Odin’s willingness to sacrifice family and just about anything for his own gain. Whether this earlier introduction will result in a change to the story to involve her earlier in the father and son’s journey or something else entirely remains to be seen.

While the original God of War followed the epic, tragic, bloody, and action-packed saga of Kratos as he killed his way through the Greek pantheon, the 2018 installment found the iconic god-slayer in a new environment with a new family and a big, bushy beard. It specifically followed Kratos and Atreus in the aftermath of the death of the Ghost of Sparta’s wife, Faye. Together, they set out to fulfill her final wish by scattering her ashes across the highest peak in the Nine Realms, though their path puts them on a collision course with other powerful Norse figures, including Sif and Thor’s two sons, Magni and Modi. Through the trials they face, Kratos tries his best to raise his son to be a better god, while Atreus, in turn, shows his father how to be a better human. Moore, known for Battlestar Galactica and adapting the Outlander novels into the smash-hit Starz series, has worked closely with God of War veteran Cory Barlog to keep the mythology and structure of the world intact, hoping to stay close to the story with a few changes tailored to the small screen.

What Else Has Teresa Palmer Done Before ‘God of War’?

Palmer also has plenty of experience in adaptations, as seen in her starring turn opposite Matthew Goode in A Discovery of Witches, based on Deborah Harkness‘ All Souls trilogy. She’s kept busy on the small screen since concluding her role as Diana Bishop in 2022, with roles in The Last Anniversary and The Family Next Door last year. Film has provided some of her most recognizable roles, however, from the aforementioned Warm Bodies to Hacksaw Ridge, I Am Number Four, Point Break, and The Fall Guy. In addition to the Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios video game series, Palmer has a few other exciting projects on the horizon, including the comedic mystery 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank with Liam Neeson and the star-studded film Subversion, led by a different Thor, Chris Hemsworth, and Lily James.
