Batman’s journey to James Gunn‘s new cinematic DC universe has taken a new turn. The Brave and the Bold, the long-gestating project that will introduce a new version of the Caped Crusader into the shared universe of last year’s Superman, has a new screenwriter in the form of Christina Hodson. The film, which is set to star Batman and his youthful sidekick Robin, does not yet have a release date.
According to reports, Hodson is penning the upcoming film for director Andy Muschietti; the two previously collaborated on 2023’s The Flash. Hodson made her screenwriting debut with the 2016 Naomi Watts thriller Shut In, and has worked on a number of genre projects since then. They include the Transformers film Bumblebee, a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot, a remake of The Fugitive, and the DC Comics films Birds of Prey and Batman Beyond, with the latter remaining unmade; she also wrote the never-to-be-released Batgirl movie. Hodson reportedly began work on the film in the fall, and it will be some time before the finished product is delivered.
What Do We Know About ‘The Brave and the Bold’?
Named after a long-running Batman team-up comic book series, The Brave and the Bold is said to introduce a new Batman to the rebooted DC cinematic universe, as well as his sidekick Robin, who hasn’t appeared in a live-action film since 1997’s Batman and Robin. However, there’s a twist: this Robin won’t be Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, or even Tim Drake. He’s Damian Wayne, the young son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul, which also makes him the grandson of arch-villain Ra’s al Ghul. The film was one of several announced as part of the first phase of Gunn‘s DCU, dubbed “Gods and Monsters.” So far, only Superman has been released, with Supergirl due this summer; several other projects announced with that slate, including The Authority and Swamp Thing, have yet to materialize.
The Batman of The Brave and the Bold is not connected to Robert Pattinson‘s Batman of 2022’s The Batman and its upcoming sequel. That film has undergone a number of delays, and is now scheduled for release on October 1, 2027. As Gunn does not plan to have two Batman movies out in a single year, that means The Brave and the Bold won’t hit theaters until at least 2028.
The Brave and the Bold is in development; no release date has yet been announced.
