A new trailer for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord has been released.
In April 2025, it was announced at the Star Wars Celebration panel in Tokyo that Lucasfilm was making an animated series based on Darth Maul, the villainous character created by George Lucas who served as the antagonist of 1999’s Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace.
The show, which is created by Dave Filoni, is set after the events of The Clone Wars. Sam Witwer will once again voice the character.

What happens in the Maul Shadow Lord trailer?
The Maul – Shadow Lord trailer sees the titular character attempting to rebuild his criminal syndicate during the rise and reign of the Galactic Empire. At the same time, he’s also training a new apprentice.
Lucasfilm VP of animation Athena Portillo previously said of the show, via Variety, “Unfortunately I can’t tell you too much, but what I can say is Sam Witwer’s involvement in the show has been pristine. I’m very excited about him being able to review the scripts and provide input in all of that as well. Dave Filoni and Sam created the character for animation, and so it’s very important to hear his thoughts as well for the character depth.”
Witwer also said that the show picks up when Maul is “dusting himself off a bit” after Ahsoka “kicked him to the curb.”
He continued, “We learn some different things about this character. He’s got some different traits that you wouldn’t necessarily think he has that make perfect sense from what he’s been through.”
The creative team also includes head writer Matt Michnovetz and supervising director Brad Rau, both of whom additionally serve as executive producers alongside Filoni and Portillo.
Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will premiere on Disney+ in 2026.
